I think John does a great job and has very good craftsmanship, with that said Elite Aquatics in Utau makes some pretty sweet custom sumps that are flat out trick. He has a full CNC machine that can do things John does not do.
My New Sump from Elite has
Adjustable water level in skimmer section from 5.5" to 9.5"
Three 7" socks
Heater holder
Probe Holders
Lid on sock section to reduce noise
Probe holders
Refugium
If you do some searches on his custom sumps he offers built in dosing chambers, top off water sections, and even built in custom calcium reactors. He also offers some pretty cool colors.
Shipping is expensive, but his packing job is top notch and will get it to you safe. I am very happy with my purchase and he quoted me three weeks to build as he was busy and shipped it to me in two. If you are on a budget he has many off the shelf models as well that are more affordable than his custom sumps.

Anyway if you research some of his custom models you could ask John to add some of these great features as having an adjustable water level in your skimmer section is great if you like to experiment with many skimmers like I do
