your use of the plastic gutter guard and "toothless" overflow walls has me wondering:
do i really need to orient the gutter guard vertically? why not just stretch it across the eggcrate in the horizontal plane?

The eggcrate is situated horizontally to block snails and other crawling critters.

The gutter guard is situated vertically to prevent fish from jumping onto the eggcrate.

If you situation the gutter guard horizontally, a jumper can get stuck on the guard and dry out.
