Sun coral spawned in my tank

fullmonti

now is the time
Thought i would share a photo of my 12" cube that my sun coral spawned in.

The parent colony that spawned is the larger more yellow polyps just left of center.

Looks awesome. Sun corals are one of the easiest corals to have spawn like this. At the California Academy of Sciences, they had on tank with so many spawning suns that it would regularly clog the pipes of the system.

Yes I have way to many now. When my 18" cube is ready I plan to sell (cheap) most of the babies at the local reef club & then move the rest of the live stock to the larger tank.

That's insane.
I'd love to experience that sometime though.
Must have been cool to realize the first time it happened.

It was. They were every where, little yellow specks & every where they touched they stuck. They were on snail shell, pcs of gravel & in the filter. Some kept getting covered with gravel by my pistol shrimp. The ones that landed in good flow & get plenty of food are bigger than the ones that are not in as good a spot.

Awesome. How hard/easy are they to care for? I don't tend to have anyone watch my tank if I'm going on vacation for a week or less, and I've worried about how non-photosynthetic corals would fare unfed for that duration.

The little ones I broadcast feed with small coral food. The adult NPS I spot feed some pretty much every day. I don't know for sure but a few days or maybe a week shouldn't hurt them too much. Maybe some one who knows for sure will clear that up?

I might add that this many NPS in a small tank (10gal system) is hard to keep good water quality. I am up to 2 20% water changes a week with lots of extra filter media. I will be trying to sell all the little ones at the local reef club soon.

Makes me think of how Aptasia spreads.
...Only yours is super awesome and Aptasia is literally Hitler.

Amazing NPS!
bet it takes you a while to spot feed each of the big ones....are your Suns always open or only when they 'smell' food being broadcasted to the smaller ones?

They open in the evening when I feed the fish. Some of the others won't open till lights out so that's when I do most the feeding.
