super aggressive royal gramma

Is everyone's gramma as aggressive as mine? She attacks crabs and knocks them off the rocks, picks up snails that wander nearby and spits them out on the sandbed, postures with the open mouth to the peppermint (which is probably why I never see it), and she bit 2 of the antennae very short on one of my scarlet cleaner shrimp. Today I introduced a purple firefish and of course she immediately went after the firefish hardcore. I turned off the small nightlight I was using to see by and closed off the room so it's pitch black. I hope this will help the firefish. Do I need to go ahead and trade the gramma in or wait and see what happens? If I keep her, would moving her from the 45 into the 150 when it's set up help? Thanks in advance for any advice.

the larger tank may help but some grammas are like this. mine are whimps for sure but I have had them in the past that were very mean. I would think the are more fierce in smaller tanks. in order to keep from killing everything else I might consider dumping his butt. then when you get the bigger tank set up get 2 tiny gramma's since they are cheap and make yourself a pair. they are very similar to clowns. born one sex or immature then turn into whats needed. they will become a pair. also make sure they are not brazilian I think is the place where they are not as vibrant. more pale purple. carribean and gulf look much better.

There is a Brazilian Strain that is very aggressive. Do a search and you'll find several threads on killer Brazilian grammas.

Thanks alot for the info guys. I did read before I got her and thought I was pretty safe. I don't think I have the Brazilian type from what I can read and some pics I found. She's got the line through her eye and looks like Gramma Loreto to me. She is absolutely gorgeous though so I hope she settles down. I still have the lights off but, when I checked on the firefish a couple of hours ago, he was kind of wedged under a rock resting. If she doesn't settle down shortly, she goes and I'll do the pair in the 150.

yes they are egg layers but can't remember if they make a ball and keep them in a cave or if they attach them to substrate.

depends on the fish and how much room they have and if the 2 you get will match up. I have seen 2 in a cube before. like I said get them tiny if you can. I got mine from john about 6-8 months ago and they hang out all over the place. 1/2 the time on opposite ends but sometimes I see them come out of the same hole right after each other. so far they don't bother any thing else in the tank. tomorrow is another day. most people don't recommend having more than one but I have seen 4 or 5 in a 110 that got along great. they were collected in the keys. not by me and years ago. before the new collecting regulations. I have also seen them fight until the death. what I would do is pick 2 out at a store then have the stores employee put them in 2 seperate cubes right next to each other. if they attack then it's a no. if they hang near each other without any trouble I would take the chance. john and jen will do that for any customer as will chris at finz. at least for me they did and I can't see jen saying no to anyone.

here is a pic that you can barely see the 2 of them hanging out during the day. look far left and you can see just see them.

Well I fed the tank with lights on, the firefish was interested and seemed to get a few small pieces that drifted by. After a few minutes, the gramma made her way over to the firefish's burrow and attacked it again. Back off with the lights and the firefish is on the sand in a corner breathing a little hard. I'm not going to risk it because the firefish is stressed, the light is staying off until I can pull the gramma in a day or two. I see them in your gorgeous tank Rob, show off, lol!

no show off laura.
mflamb I tell you what. you buy the tank and you can put doors on it and trim it exactly the way you want it ;)
it's for sale and I can't see it being worth my money and effort to finish it. I don't think I will get an extra $800 out of it. doors are about $400 unstained. I have the stain but then you have oak trim . and if I did it I would get nice oak trim and lots of it.

teasing you Rob, the tank really is sweet though. I can't believe you are selling it. I'm pretty close on the 150, it may be running skimmerless later this week if I end up getting a stand. If I do, I may try the gramma in there one last time before trade in (after the firefish of course). I'm kind of attached to the stupid gramma, I call her Dotty.

well thanks just think if I hadn't burned so many brain cells ;) don;t worry it wasn't smoking pot.
I know your teasing laura no problem. dotty huh? how original ;) hehhee I think you could probably name the next one dotty and it will fit just as well. what would you name it's mate though?

so how did you burn those brain cells? :D: i guess I could name the next one the same and the mate too but do you know what a pain it's going to be to get 100 or so lbs. of rock out of that 45 to catch that stupid fish, lol? I just cleaned the carpet in there too, naturally:rolleyes:
