In México I buy 50 pound bags of calcium hidroxide Aka kalkwasser for us$3, yes, 3 bucks, it is distributed to make tortillas, it is the same as the one used in construcción but this one is food grade, I have been using it for 8 years on my 200 galon display

It should be available in the US, find the tortilla dealer and ask where they get the calcium hidroxide (cal), try in a mexican restaurant. It is used to remove the shell of the corn grain, mexican restaurants use it also for other dishes that use corn as an ingredient

You can also find Calcium Hydroxide at most feed stores, I bought a 50lb bag, used in poultry production, for $23 CAD. I have been using it for 3 years with no ill effect, should be cheaper down in the States

When I have always gone it I just Asked for Calcium Hydroxide for poultry, may be sold as lime in the US.... Canada has a weird purity law on selling lime, can't even get pickling lime up here, even though its the same thing

you just have to go to a Co-op or Farmers supply type place, as this is not something your big box stores carry
