Sweet! New RTBA!

Yes, the Korallias will eat him up. "Keeping an eye" out won't work; they always wait until you aren't looking!

I'd get some plastic canvas or eggcrate similar and create a cage around your pumps, at least until s/he settles somewhere permanently.

I've never had an RBTA, but after several dozen GBTA's (clones of the same mother), they love to give themselves buzz cuts. I kept powerheads up high, so it wasn't as likely (though they still found a way from time to time). I never lost one to a powerhead, though. If you get ojne caught in one, just turn the pump off and let the anemone fall out on it's own, rather than trying to pull it out of the screen. I only ran MJ's, though, so Koralia's make a much easier target.

Mine never moved except for after a cloning, and the mother usually settled back into a location within 3" of the old location after coming back out from the rockwork. The babies wandered constantly, though.

The only coral I lost in 8 years of keeping BTA's was a hydnophora frag I got from an LFS meeting (probably EBay in the early days of the club). It got knocked down into the sand where the big momma was stationed and she quickly destroyed it. I had a good many others get hit when the anemones were wandering, but they never lost any tissue over it (just showed signs of stress in localized areas). That all said, I've heard that RBTA's can be more aggressive when it comes to stinging corals.

To be honest, nicole, the eggcrate is much bigger than the areas around the koralia. :) I truly believe he is probably alright. The small slits in it are no more than 1/8" apart and are still 1/2" from the blade all the way around. At the same time, he may be able to find a way into them I understand, but I feel pretty safe with them. I've seen my lettuce nudibranch crawl on them (freaked me OUT the first time!) and he can cruise on them no problem, so I believe the RBTA should be fine. :)

Thanks for the post, Gary. At this point I'll wait and watch what happens and try to save any corals in the way. I've already moved my tricolor. :)

They're great, Mark! Although right now he seems to have settled in the BACK of my tank. Go figure. :D

Brandon

Hmmm... he is retracted and has hid for the last 24 hours or so. I'm a bit concerned that he's retracted, but I'll give him another day or two.

Any thoughts? Am I just nervous? :)

Maybe find out long it's been since it initially split. Mine split like crazy when thye got stressed, so maybe it's having some sort of issue getting acclimated for some reason. It's hard to suspect a water problem, though if everything else is doing fine... Are the clowns being rough with it?

Fortunately he doesn't have any clowns to worry about until I get a chance to go see Matt C. next week. :)

I'll keep an eye on him and see what happens. I'll also go ahead and do some parameter checks tonight.

Brandon

Think your lighting might be different and it needs to adjust? Plus the water parameters are surely different combined they could be the reason It's hiding. As long as you don't see a gaping mouth it may just be getting used to your tank, Give it some time to adjust.

Thanks, Bill. I'm thinking the same, but I'm still nervous. :)

I can't see its mouth because its kind of back behind a rock still. I'll keep an eye on it and go from there.

Brandon

Well, he is still hiding and coming out every once in a while. Took some readings today... all seemed fairly well.

Salinity: 1.024
Calcium: 370
Magnesium: 1170
Kh/Alk: 8.0
Ammonia: 0
Nitrates: 0

I don't have a way of checking my pH at the moment, but I'm topping off (as I've done for the last year) with kalkwasser... so I feel it should be ok.

Makes me nervous since we're about to leave for a week.

He doesn't seem to be bad, though... just kinda shy I suppose.

Brandon

Mag is a little low but not that much. But I'll bet your salinity is lower than his was, Just a guess may not matter though. Have you fed it yet, I would feed it b4 you leave They always look better after a meal! Don't think it will hurt.

Possibly, Bill. I ordered some stainless steel tongs to feed him with... I wish they were here... I'll try to reach around the rock and give him a mysis or two tomorrow. :)

My GBTA shrunk and hid for quite some time, I doubt there is anything wrong, it is just adjusting.

I did want to mention that mine found its way to the Koralia today and luckily my daughter saw it and I was able to shut it off and let him work his way out. I thought like you that it wouldn't be an issue. If it starts wandering again I may shut them off.

Mine always loved MJ1200's... They don't have much of an opening, so they must have had a graduate level class on working tentacles into small slits:D. They love to give themselves buzz cuts for some reason.

"RBTA 7650 - Small Openings and How to Get Into Them"

- Class meets MTWRF. Class will discuss small openings in a manner that represents giving yourself a buzz cut. Practicum is a co requisite and is required, no exceptions. 4 hours including practicum. Permission of department may be required for those under 18 months (anemone years).

Ok, I'm done. Sorry, I'm looking at summer and fall classes right now trying to graduate (again...), so class descriptions are just on my mind. :D
