The first one is Dyed :( for sure.

Yellow isnt a natural color variant for Sebae.

If that were true - the oral disk would also be yellow - right?

thats what i though at first...Dyed. Just couldn't pass up the deal. Either way they still look sweet to me! Kinda makes me wish I still had my pink and white Malu.

Its completely yellow except for the tips (I hope it stays that way).
Otherwise I'll have to soak it in some yellow dye....LOL....JK.

Kim they have been doing that for years with Sebaes. Its pretty common information really. The oral disc doesn't seem to pick up the dye as much from experience.

Search this forum for more info :).

Clearly dyed, but hopefully after it loses the yellow dye in a few weeks it will regain zooxanthellae and survive. It's unfortunate that this destructive practice is still common.

If it stays that way for long without turning brown it will be dying rather than you dying it ;) Good luck and you need to hope it starts turning tan/brown.

Hopefully it has a better chance of making it with me than someone else. I have the lights, the water, and I've been feeding it everything I got blended together sprinkled with selecon. So far both are responding well! Hopefully I can get a Picture a day to document the change. Keep your fingers crossed for me.

Anyone familiar with the dying process?

Yes, it's kinda like dying an easter egg ;)

A few days later now. Both have settled in and are eating well. The oral disk on the sebae is now white with yellow stripes.

well, you might saving this anemone, local fish store don't look at it that way, if the yellow one sell, they will buy more yellow one...
actully it might sounds cruel, but the best way just let it dies or let it change back to brown in the store tank, educate your LFS owner or livestock manager not to order them no more. if no one buying them, they won't dye them anymore.

In a perfect world that would be true, but the dyed ones are going to continue to sell. There will always be people in this hobby that are just uninformed, it can't be helped. Not everyone takes the time to do months of research before entering the hobby, you know? Heck, there are people who have been doing this for 5 or 6 years that know less than me about reef tanks, some people just don't care. If it's pretty, they want it, they don't care if the method to make it pretty is detrimental to its health or if the high mortality rate caused by their unsuccessful attempts to keep them is causing wild population to decline.

Look at all the people keeping Mandarin's in tanks that they cannot possibly hope to sustain them in. It's pretty much the same issue, misinformation and continuing sales is the bane of this hobby and of the ocean.

Someone at the LFS has to start stepping up and getting educated, and stop making sales for the sake of the sale. I'm sick of seeing people going home with anemones, when after overhearing their conversation with the store clerk it's painfully obvious they do NOT have the equipment or knowledge to keep them.
