Switching from RC to TMP

So I'm going to switch salts from Reef Crystals to Tropic Marin Pro.

As I do a phased switch over do I just us both salts to make the water or make separate batches and then mix them together?

I would test both newly mixed batches and dose accordingly before any water changes, then just start with slow/small waterchanges and increasing as long as everything looks "Happy" :D

Although you are going to be using a better product, the differences arent "that" drastic. Just start adding some TMPR salt in with the RC as you do water changes over the course of the next 3-4 water changes until you are out of RC.
You are making the right move btw, TMPR is great salt.

I've got a fairly new bucket of RC, another bad one and I'm feed up. I'm not going to go through all the RC first. I'll just use the RC for fish QT.

So switch completely or do it over 4 water changes, 1/4 TMPR then 1/2 etc until full strength?

Bad is CA = 375 and MG=1000. I like to run at at least 450 and 1300. I haven't made a batch yet to test the TMPR

When you run out of RC, start using the TMPR, you don't need to do anything special.

I agree, just do the switch in one water change. Its not a big deal at all. Especially if you are only changing out 10-20% of the water.

what's the difference Rod? I just heard some good reviews about the regular and I was expecting he used the pro. He told me the difference isn't worth the price hike? do you agree.

Are you sure you want to use the pro and not just the regular TM
Yeah, I already bought it and I've read lots of people who like it with the only complaint being cost.

I'm going 50/50 on this water change and will go 100% on next one.

Many people think that it has higher CA and Alk much like RC has higher CA and alk than IO. But the TMpro has lower CA and alk than regular TM

I've found Cal to be about equivalent IME, however, alk is lower. Rod is correct though. TMPro is made for use with a calcium reactor. Without a reactor, I'd say TM would be a better choice.

When I was using TM my calcium was low, in the 350's. I don't run a reactor, which is why I switched salts. I am trying out coralife right now. calcium is at 450.

TMPR is for tanks that have some sort of suppliment calcium and alk. Its a German thing apparently. They talk about it on their website. Doing a 10-20% waterchange using their reef salt will not drop your levels too low if you have a reactor of some kind or use the balling method as they call it (2 part).

Thanks Rod that's good to kjnow as I do not run a Calcium reactor. TM would be better then for me. I just swutched to Oceanic becasue of some numbers I had seen. It tested at 480 Ca and 12 dKh with API kits at 1.025.

When you look at the testing done by Billybeau1 and the AWT test they both point to TMPR having more Ca and more MG than regular TM. So why are people saying TMPR is for those who run reactors ?

I wish the AWT test would have mixed every salt to 35 ppt instead of taking 7 grams dry weight of salt mix. TM mixed to 32 ppt and TMPR mixed to 30.8 so if the additions to get to 35 ppt are linear then their numbers would match Billbeau1's of:

TM = CA-375, MG-1230 and Alk-10
TMPR = CA-450, MG-1350 and Alk 8.5

Since I want to be at CA=450, MG above 1300 and Alk at 8 to 9, I picked TMPR.
