Swollen area on Achilles tang

Loving the reef

New member
I just purchased a 10 in. Achilles tang and he had a swollen area on the right side of his face just behind his eye. I thought it was just an injury from being captured. In just a few days the area has gotten much larger and is traveling dozen the lateral line on that side. Does anyone know what this could be? I will try to post a picture.

Looking at his face I'd almost say ammonia burn but its something else. A ten inch Achilles is way to large to capture and transport and will most likely not acclimate to aquarium life. Is it in a tank of at least 6 feet long? Vigorous water flow? Any kind of medication? I notice you said its in a qt but why do you have substrate? Should be bare bottom for medicating purpose.

I guess I should clarify. I am still in the process of making this a qt tank, it was a reef tank so the sand is the last thing left in the tank. The only medication in the tank is prazi pro. I fresh water dipped it with meth. Blue for about ten minutes. At this time the tank is a 75g he is in with great flow. All the levels are where they should be. If and when I can get him cleared up he will be going into a 250g deep tank. If it is ammonia burn does it clear up? I have very large fish and have never delt with ammonia burn. My largest fish is 15 in. It is a passer angel. Any help would be great.
