Synergy reef overflow?

Keep the water level in the exterior box about 1/2" above the bulkhead. That keeps my noise to zero once the stand pipe gets full. I have a ATS and a Phosphate reactor that are fed off the return. If I take one of those offline for cleaning, NOISE NOISE NOISE. Once back online no noise. Currently, I am using fluconazole, and had to take the ATS and Phosphate reactors offline for 3 weeks. I just tweak the ball valve to adjust the level in the exterior box and back to silent in a few minutes.

When I was experimenting with siphon pipe levels I noticed the higher I made it, the longer it took to create the siphon.
I was able to correct that by plugging the hole in the siphon U pipe but then it became a little inconsistent on start up.
I lowered it a tad, unplugged the hole to get the super fast startup but - as I mention it does put the water level just below the bulkheads. Not a lot, just a little.
Do you think further experimenting to get it slightly higher would eliminate that turbulence? I thought the turbulence had to do with the overflow grates.

you have to get it equal to or slightly higher than the bulkhead. Otherwise you will get noise from the exterior box. I also put an elbow in exterior box for the pipe that doesn't have the valve and I extended the emergency pipe to about 1" above the bottom of the bulkheads.

I am not sure what you mean by Siphon U pipe? I don't have any U pipes in my overflow.

I have nothing plugged up. I turn off my system everyday, turn if back on, get a few minutes of noise and then QUIET!!!!!!

Looking at your pics, I understand the Siphon U pipe. The water level in the exterior box needs to box above that pipe, get rid of all the air and create a pipe with 100% water and no air. What happens when you first start up? It looks like to me, the emergency pipe kicks in before the water completes the full siphon in the elbow.

I love my Synergy overflow, I run the gate valve wide open with no noise and no issues. I installed it on my new 75g running a 900gph pump.

OK, thanks chaps. I'm looking to push probably 1,500 gph through the overflow on a 8' tank. I think the internal box will be too small even at 20". Think I will probably make my own.

Simon, I spoke with Tyler from Elite Aquatics last night about an overflow for a new tank I'm contemplating. He has a 30" model that has 3 - 1 1/2" drains. Would probably fit the bill for what your looking for. Don't know the gph but the 16" one he made for me will handle 1500 gph.

The 20" will definitely handle 1500 gph. I have a 3100 gph pump running on my 180 with the 20" Synergy Overflow, and I am having no issues whatsoever.

Not just about flow rate though, it's also about the weir being long enough to accomplish ideal surface skimming. Doesn't seem that a 20" skim box would be ideal for a long tank? I've seen some folks use two.

You may be right. I am not sure what "ideal" surface skimming is, or how you would measure it. I know my tank appears to be healthy and functioning correctly. But...appearances can be deceiving.

I was just talking specifically about flow in answer to the statement/question regarding the 20" handling 150 gph. Which I can state with certainty, it can.

Understood, thanks. I'm leaning towards having MM build me a 48" overflow (or perhaps use their 36" stock model).
