Great work cully!

I was up at the zoo a few months ago and did a walk through of their system and gave the new people some pointers and ideas. It was pretty clear that their tanks had been taken care of for a long time by a 'non-reef' person, and they had a long way to go. I've been in contact on and off with the new staff taking over the tank and their level of enthusiasm and drive to learn more I think will lead that tank in the right direction going forward. I'll be sending some frags up at some point I'm sure, and I feel comfortable that they will be well taken care of going forward. I would encourage others to do the same. :-)

I thank you for your continued support. Tad, it's nice for someone else to verify their enthusiasm. A lot of what has handicapped them, IMO is funding, or the lack there of. It's nice, as local hobbiests, that we can support this effort, and know it's appreciated.

I know the care takers love their inhabitants. As we were contemplating what to do with the Hippo tang, we discussed putting him in a QT off display for a few weeks to let the new tank settle. A voice from somewhere back in the bowels of the zoo echoed "You gotta put the damsel and hippo together.....THEY'RE BUDDIES!!!". Deb has long been one of the Reef overseers, and is a riot. Again, very psyched about the whole deal.

Deb is great, a true animal lover. I'm trying to put them in touch with the company that sells us our salt, it should save them a boat load of money each year buying it straight from the company at the non-profit price.

OK so here's the deal. You can bring corals to ABC Reefs to be put in a temp holding tank. Transfer is sched for a week from this coming Saturday. So like 10 days or so.

Here's the rub. The zoo really wants to focus on aquacultured or aquaculturable corals and captive bred fishes. So, MOST fishes won't do. I think they are going to get fishes from other zoos or vendors that deal in breeding, i.e. ORA. Corals like Trachy brains won't work either as most are wild caught (as far as I know they aren't an aquacultured coral). So euphillias, SPS, softies that can be fragged are welcomed.

Thanks guys, hope this is understandable and makes sense. Any questions give let me know or call ABC.

Cully

hmm i have 2 captive raised false percs i was planning on getting rid of....but does it already have a pair?

im down to donate some SPS....i have lotsa grape /orange cap....and some other stuff im sure uve donated already mark lol

I've got some zoos, frogspawn, pocillapora, orange cap, purple cap, green digi, orange digi, brown milli, elkhorn and probably something else I can frag for them. do we just bring it in to abc and say "heres coral for the zoo"?

This is great news Cully! Props you you and everyone at ABC for this. I can't wait to see some great things in that tank when I visit next.

Yeah Tim is heading it up so of u bring it and its pest free it'll make it over to the zoo or my house if its something really nice.

Please make sure it is pest free! No redbugs or flatworms in the zoo tanks!! lol. Tim let everyone know in the shop what is going on so they are all ready for donations.

Gives me an excuse to run up to ABC! Thanks for the info Cully! I'll be taking a few bags up hopefully saturday, and me and my friend can check out stuff for his future new tank! He's doing a 30x30x14" shallow cube. It's gonna be sick!

Just make sure everyone calls a day ahead or if not earlier that day. Room has to be made for all these fantastic donations. Let them know what you plan on bringing. As of now...they are NOT looking for, kenyan trees, xenias, glove polyps, green star polyps...and other weed like corals. As gorgeous as they all are, the Zoo does not want a tank loaded with these types of corals! :lol2:

Hahaha I hear ya! I'll try to get my stuff up there at some point. Is next saturday the cutoff or can we bring stuff after then also. I think I'll have a few SPS and LPS and Paly's and Zoas to bring up. Thanks for the info!

As what I am aware of you can bring things up anytime but I would give Tim at ABC a call to make sure. It's always best to hear directly from the speaker.

Got a little updat from Tim today. I was involved in the initial redo, but haven't been to the zoo since. They've just been letting the tank stabilize. But today Protein skimmer is up and runnng. Emptied the "mud" from refugium. Maristar lighting should of been installed this afternoon. They brought a duncan, stylo, frogspawn, ricordia, stag.... as coral donations.

All good things! Keep the coral donations coming, there might be a little somthing in it for you . See my other thread about ABC Coupons.....

Thanks for your support everyone!!!!

its going to be awesome ! it takes a long time to do such a large project especially when many people are involved with the decision making . already looks better than every other display in the zoo and it all due to ABC reefs and a few close friends that have donated their time and knowledge to the project . cant wait to see how it evolves throughout the next six months to a year as it will then truly be awesome .
