T Maxima clam in jbj nano cube 12g

you have alot to learn before going crazy and getting a Maxima that will for sure die with your setup. MH's is the only way to keep Maxima's and Crocea's healthy. Mine is under Duel 250watt DE MH's

Lighting aside..... nano's are hard enough to keep stable without jumping into the harder to keep animals right away. Personaly I wouldn't try a clam in my nano cube. Space is at a minimum as it is. A clam would take up too much space and have to be removed anyway.

I have a maxima and a dersea in a 10 gallon for almost 2 years now. I've never ever tested my CA. I dont even own a single test kit.

But...

I have a refugium, 10K Metal Halide w. Icecap electronic ballast, dose kalk and kent liquid calcium. I have coraline like crazy, Monti Cap, Digi, Green slimer, Pink Cap, and other various SPS. No problems at all ever since I took out the DSB about a year ago.

But, I'm sure you will agree that's the exception, and not the rule. :) Testing CA/ALK on any tank is a good thing

thanks for the heads up gregmoeck, but I know it is not wise to put a maxima clam in my nano cube with the setup I curently have. :D

I went ahead and bought the alk/cal salifert tests anyways, for now.

I also picked ordered a blue atc type refractometer and a digital ph tester.

btw, later when I get more experince, aged the tank further, get a refugium, a 10k mh with actinic suppliment, I will think about getting the maxima clam.

I am now currently figuring out how to build an auto top off. My dad said something about using a clothes washing machine float switch. I will check out how big the switch is first.

DOn't use a float switch....they kill tanks. They only work well with backup systems, like being attached to a peristalic pump.

For further proof, two tanks of the month have been wiped out 100% by float switches!

thats odd, please give me the thread.

What happened? the switch failed and flooded the tank?

Did a snail get on the switch with no snail guard and activated the switch?

What happended?

btw way, I am making an RO water auto top.

They are not failsafe, and float vales and switches get stuck on more than anyone would care to admit. In the last 18 months, there have been at least 10 tanks on RC wiped out by auto top off systems, including 2 tanks of the month. Both those oflks said they thought "I'll be careful, it will never happen to me" and they paid the price.

If you really want safe auto top off get a peristalic pump or a Tunze Osmolator.

okay, I will do the research, thanks for the advice.

I am still curious on how those top off switches failed, do you remember the members nick names?

Float valves

Float valves

Float valves can fail when the seal fail. It can also fail when there is a loss of water from the tank (leaks, skimmer over float ect... )
When there is water loss from the system, fresh water will decrease salinity to the point of killing all your animals. Don't think that loss of water is something that only happen to other people.
About clams, there will be people who claims that they keep heathy Crocea or Maxima clams under NO, PC or VHO. Maybe they can, and more power to them. But Crocea and Maxima requires bright light which mean high up in a tank full of PC and VHO, or lower under MH. Clams looks better when you can see them top down, which you cannot if you leave them near the surface of the water.

thanks for the float switch info Minh, and also thanks for commenting on the clams. I have already decided not to do clams.
