The Grim Reefer
Ready for some NOBALL!!!
Answered PM
Have you ever tested any of the Icecap T5 lamps? I wonder if icecap has them made by one of the other companies?
Thanks
They are UVL lamps with better electrodes to hold up to overdriving if you use Ice Cap ballasts.
Sweet thanks. So ......
Deepwater 14k= 75.25 UVL
Midwater 12k= Actinic white UVL
Reef crest 10k= Aquasun UVL
Actinic= Super actinic 420nm UVL
Twighlight= ?????
Is this right? Just trying to make sure I don't order the wrong ones. Thanks
Thats it, the Twilight is their blue lamp, UVL 454
So that is the bulb with an internal reflector and low par numbers? When I was looking up them up online they don't mention the twilight bulb having an internal reflector. Do they sell something similar to a blue +? I won a gift certificate for some T5 lamps and would like to try to find something similar to the blue +.
I read through some early pages and some late pages and am just confused. There are so many combos you've provided people with that I just don't know what to go with.
I have a 72" current nova extreme with 12 39W T5s (6 + 6) and need to replace all the bulbs, it coming up on 18 months.
I don't care much about having the tank particularly looking blue, pink or whatever but am looking for best coral growth. Please kindly tell me which bulbs to buy, their placement and optimum period they should be kept on considering that I mostly keep softies.
Thanks a bunch, can't wait to get a reply from the guru.

Arrange them so you have blue plus for dusk/dawn. 10 to 12 hours for the dusk/dawn and 8 to 10 hours for the rest.
Great, very prompt response. As I was working on ordering the above I learned that the UVL bulbs are on sale ad DR F+S. Can a decent combo be built with UVL bulbs that would save me some coin?
UVL actinic whites are $15.19
UVL Aquasun are $15.19
UVL SuperActinic are $15.19
Can we at least mix these in or are the savings not worth it. Please LMK.
Stick with what I recoed.
Ordered exactly as recommended. Thanks once again for your support. :beer: One question though, why aren't you selling yet? :hmm4:
Thought about it. Thought about designing my own fixtures too but there are a couple other companies stepping up so no need.
You have something no company has; there is a reason your threads go on for pages and pages and any forum you ask about bulbs the reply is "Ask Grim on RC" Well, your choice but I think you're missing out here my friend. Anyhow, once again, thanks for your help in choosing the right config for my tank.
Problem is if I started selling I would no longer be able to answer questions, slight conflict of interest there :fun2:
Then just start your own lighting forum. Your sheep know your voice; they will follow.
Grim, as a side note, are there any new numbers on the most recent generations of bulbs, say, in the past year? I know of the numbers posted at the start of this particular thread, but I'm wondering if there are any numbers on bulbs from recent days to see if anyone has improved or degraded their build quality and output.
Nothing really startling other than Sanjay and now Dana Riddle starting to take spectrometer readings of T5's nothing really new. Turns out the Blue Plus has more PAR than the Aquasun. I knew the PAR meter under read blue light as opposed to red which it over reads but never expected it to be that big a difference.
