T5 lamp PAR readings

Are the fans at one end? If you could mount a couple pulling at the other end too that would work. it should pull all the hot air out of the fixture.

Yeah, two 3" fans are on one end pulling air through the fixture. There's not enough room inside the fixture to put one at each end.

Somewhere along the line they started using the Orbit fixture instead of the Satellite fixture for the Nova Extremes. The only reason i can think that they did this was so they could use fans. Online and catalog retailers still show pictures and give the dimensions of Satellite style fixture though.

Probably not much you can do to improve that then

Grim,

Do you know if anyone makes a good 18" T5?

Thanks!

Helios has some odd size stuff out there, you might check them.

I have a 55 gallon with 8 54 watts. 4 current daylights and 4 current actinic. I got the fixture used with the bulbs. The past couple of month I have been getting a lot of algae. After trying everything and making sure that all my test were at zero I decided it might be the bulbs. I think my tank looks to white and would like a more of a blue tint. I’m trying to keep a little of everything in my tank at any levels. What do you think I should try?
Thanks!

Fauna Marin versus ATI Powermodule

Lamp for lamp the Fauna Marin T5 I have right now is way more intense and I have an ATI unit on the way that is supposed to be even better. More intensity with less wattage is hard to beat.
If I understand you correctly, both the Fauna Marin and the ATI Powermodule fixtures have active cooling to increase output with less wattage. However, the Fauna Marin fixture has larger reflectors than the ATI Powermodule. In your tests, did the Fauna Marin fixture direct more PAR into the aquarium than the ATI Powermodule by virtue of its reflectors?

How old are your lamps?

The only powermodule I've tested so far is a 4x39 watt unit which did 302 at the sand. The 6 lamp FM unit did 332 with FM reflectors and 363 with 5 Aquactinics reflectors. Not really an apples to apple comparison. I have an ATI Sunpower on the way wich is also a 6 lamp unit so we will see whats up. A 6x54 watt Powermodule should in theory outperform the FM based on the performance of the 39 watt unit.

That’s the think I have no idea. I got it from someone that I now don't trust. But I got it used in June so no matter how old the are there coming up on a year soon that is why I have waited until now to change them. But my water parameters are perfect and I have had everyone one I know to test it for me with there test and they are the same. There are only 4 fish in their two baby Ocellaris and two baby blue/green chromis and a great clean up crew. I change 10 gallons a week and pick at algae with a turkey baster everyday along with my urchin. My light cycle is only 6 hours and I just add my old skilter back to help trap some and my coral life super skimmer is turned up high. And the hair algae will not stop.
Thanks for the quick response and insterest!

Well Fisher, I guess you need new lamps. BUMMER!!!

I would try this

Blue Plus
Super Actinic
Aquablue
Aquasun or GE 3000K
Blue Plus
GE 6500K
Super Actinic
Blue Plus

How do you think that T6's in tek II reflectors would do? I am building a bigger tank, and I have 4 T5, and 4 T6 fixtures that I am going to be dismantling, and putting in good reflectors. It is going to be a 48" cube, 22" deep. and I only have the eight lights right now, so looking to maximize what I already have. Also for this type of situation would you recommend making an array that sends light outward? I am going to be spacing the bulbs around 4" apart and they will be located in the middle. I may add 2 more T5 at another time, or possibly a pair of 175 MH but for now will be just the 8 t5 and t6.

So do you think that will be enough light? I will be setting up two LR mounds with SPS on the top but mostly LPS. Also what about the array spreading the light out? Do you have an optimum plan to light a cube with this light setup?

For a big cube like that it would be hard to beat a couple halides in Lumenarc reflectors. A couple of 250's is going to give you good intensity over a 48 x maybe 36" footprint.

With fluorescents you would need 16 lamps to cover that same area. Assuming you use all T5's thats around 800 watts.

But I'd just have the areas with corals lit. Picture 2 ridges of Live Rock running the length of the T5/ T6 bank with the coral directly beneath. With about 3.5" between each bulb, it's 28" of lighting. If it was centered over the coral growing rock, wouldn't that be OK? Figuring that a 90 gal is about 18" wide, and that could be lit with 4 T5's, if I only care about illuminating 36" and growing coral in THAT area, would that work? Would it work better with no actinic? What are your thoughts, MH isn't really an option at this point.

Wouldn't the 2-250's get rather dim at the edges?

What would be your choice of bulbs for a situation like this. I like blue white color. Like Ushio 14K.

You need more blue than you would think. If you were using 8 lamps I would do this

Blue Plus
Super Actinic
GE 6500K
Aquablue
GE 3000K
Aquablue
Blue Plus
Aquablue
