T5 lighting for clams?

We have 6 clams under our T5s. Before loading the T5's we ran with 6 VHO. The mantle extension we have seen under the T5s has been very impressive. The Maximas have really responded well with the new lighting setup. Wish I could say the same for everything else, but we are adjusting...

dougchambers-Thank you very much.Your T5 notes and your journal were very helpful. I am using VHO and PC's over my 125,but I plan on going with a larger tank.I was dreading the thought of firing up MH's because of the heat and expense. I have been following most of the T5 posts, but I never saw anyone mention how their clams acclimated(or didn't).From what I can gather, everyone is pretty happy with the T5's-once they find the right combination of bulbs. Would you post again if you have any regrets or additional information?Thank you, again for documenting this project.

Rothie,

To be honest, we still have some regrets. When we first made the transition, we went from 6 VHO to 8 T5 and literally smoked everything in the tank. We were blocking the light and reduced the photoperiod, but it didnââ"šÂ¬Ã¢"žÂ¢t help. After a couple of weeks, we backed off and re-wired for 6 bulbs, which has been a better compromise.

Ultimately we still like the look of VHO. Our color renditions seemed deeper and we got better fluorescing from our SPS. However, the T5 lighting looks more natural to me. Weââ"šÂ¬Ã¢"žÂ¢ve tried a number of different combinations and are pretty happy with the current setup. Iââ"šÂ¬Ã¢"žÂ¢d like to get rid of the yellow cast, but until more bulbs are offered, we are pretty locked in.

URI indicated they are looking at the T5 lighting platform, but they canââ"šÂ¬Ã¢"žÂ¢t get their 03-Actinic bulbs to fire consistently. It would be nice if they had their bulb offerings in T5.

For now we are going to just let everything settle in for a few months and see where we end upââ"šÂ¬Ã‚¦

T5

I just upgraded my tank and lighting. I went from a 135 gallon with 250 and 400 watt MH to a 300 gallon T5 setup. I have 4 clams from my old setup in the new setup and so far they look happy. T5 light are awesome - LOW HEATââ"šÂ¬Ã‚¦. My aquarium room is not an oven now (A/C not running to cool house as much), color is good and coral looks happy.

T5 setup is 8 bulbs with parabolic reflector driven by 2 660 Icecaps
2 antinics 2 65Ks 4 10Ks
Tank is 96x30Tx24D

Since switching to T5 have begun to try clams. So far so good. Two maxes and a squamosa look GREAT. Had some, uh, booboos w/a crocea that cost me....but it's not the lighting.

dat,
I've done that personally and two things come up that I've noticed. One, the T5s produce more light than the VHOs. Two, there's not much difference IMO between a T5 actinica and a URI. A little, but not much.
HIH Chuck.
