Tamarin Wrasse Primer.

Reviving this old but productive thread. Has anyone got a red tail or yellow tail tamarin recently?

What would be the ideal size for best odds of survival? A vendor has two 4 inch red tail females and I'm pondering getting one or both.

I would love to have people post more experiences with A. neoguinaicus. I just got mine today. She started to eat mysis already. My QT is full of pods. I hope she will do well.

OrianN.....how are your China Wrasses doing? I finally decided to try one again. I got him on Monday, did a drip acclimation and put him straight into my DT. Was eatting Mysis at the LFS. Eats Mysis from day one for me. Keeping my fingers crossed this time!

My pair did great. I had option of getting a third one but I passed. They hunt all day long but also eat pretty much everything I feed the tank. So far very trouble free.

Oh that's great! My first I had for several years, and he was probably about 8 inches when he died. After that I have not had good luck with them. They are always eatting Mysis and picking at rocks, then a week or two later they don't come out of the sand. So I am trying again. I am keeping my fingers crossed. Do you have any tips for me? I just added about a bunch of pods the other day too. He is eating Mysis from day one.....he is about 3 inches big!

Does anybody know about the approximate size of a China Tamarin when they may change from female to male? I have two in my 320 and would love to have a pair.

Minh, mine is about three inches and still female, although there is some slight markings on the head showing some color, but the body color is all female.

Mike, I recalled you only have 1 instead of a pair? You have seen mine recently, is your larger than my large one?

Thanks.
Once in a while, I tape a small linear segment of 4-6 inches piece of paper right in the middle lower of my tank. With this, as the fish swim about, I can fairly accurately estimate their length.
You be surprise how much you underestimate your fish size without it, at least I was.

Are you measuring the fish length, with or without the tail?

Had this wrasse a few years and he's gone full male. Love the colors on them. I've kept several over the years and while they are listed as difficult I've been successfully with them.

About 4-5" in my experience.

Hi! I was hoping to keep this Tamaran primer alive! I just added my 15th Wrasse in my 200 gallon.....a yellow tail tamaran. I have 7 Leopards and one Tamaran....now two. My LFS had him for 3 weeks, he ate Mysis like a champ when I was there. Put him in, he stayed out about a hour and then hit the sand! Wish me luck! Sorry not the best pic! Will add more later!
