Tang advice

Hey all

I'm considering the possibility of adding a tang to my tank. It's only a 75 gallon, but there is decent swimming room. For all those of you that stopped reading at 75, I might have also.. hopefully you've made it this far though. The tank if 5 feet long, 18 high, 18 wide. I know I can't go with a blue tang.. but I was wondering if because of the length of the tank a Naso or Bristletooth might not feel too cramped? I'm not set on a tang.. I'd like one, but I prefer happy healthy fish. If I'd be "jamming" a tang I won't do it.. there are an insane amount of beautiful, interesting fish out there, and I'll just move on to one of them instead. (The tank isn't ready for a fish that requires a more established tank yet anyway, but if I were to think I could keep a tang, I'd tailor any other inhabitants to that choice..)

Suggestions/advice please?

I have just added a Tomini tang in my 90 and he is doing great. I started out small with him only bieng about 3-4" but i say go for it. But i would consider him bieng the only one in there and make him the "specimen" fish
 
When you say a bristletooth could work, are you saying he might be happy? I mean, is that one of the depends on the actual individual fish questions, or are you saying that any bristletooth would be questionable?
 
Its always going to depend on the individual fish and the specific environment you have. The best anyone can do is give you general guidelines. I think you let the tang police affect your own ability to judge the situation.

No, that is most likely an acceptable fish type. But "tang police" is a pejorative and it would be best to avoid using that term.
 
If you thought the 5' space was too small for a 'blue tang' (assuming you are refering to a hippo) why would it suffice for a naso? No, the tank is very undersized for a 2' fish. 5'x18" could get away with a yellow, purple, scopas, bristletooth...
 
5x18x18 is not 75 gallons... you are trying to make your tank seem bigger than it is. 75 gallons are 4'x18"x18".

Naso, out of the question...

Bristletooth I would say is okay.

I don't understand why that phrase is suddenly taboo. Whether or not it's pejorative depends on how it's used in my opinion..
 
He says it is 18x18... so it can't be 5 foot. The reason I don't think it is 5 foot and not 18x18 is because most standard 75 gallon glass tanks for sale at LFS are 4'x18"x18"... I used to have an oceanic tank with those dimensions and AGA, and perfecto have the same dimensions.
 
OK.. first off, for all you who want to fight the tank size.. SHE says it is 5 foot, 18X18.. And SHE says that because it is 5 foot, 18 high and 18 wide. Its a tritan plexaquarium, and since she's been keeping fish long enough to have a tank you all have never heard of, she DESERVES a little more respect than being accused of lying about the size of a freaking tank.
I asked the question because I care about the fish, and must have mistaked the size/requirements for the Naso when researching, hence asking the question here, so as I wouldn't make a "REAL" mistake.

Y'all need to watch tone. I asked a question, and now I'm walking away feeling like I called people names, and lied to try to direct the answer to the question.
 
As for referring to anyone as the "Tang Police", I see it all the time, and meant it lightheartedly, hoping a "creative" title would help foster interest in the thread. If anyone found it offensive, I apologize.

I would agree. But on Reef Central it is often used to put down people who are advocating for a more appropriate tank size for a given tang. Why not simply ask for "tang experts" or "people with experience with tangs"?

Relax. It is very common for people to be mistaken about the gallonage/measurements of a tank. You were doing the right thing by asking for opinions. Don't let a side issue distract the good advice.
