And far too frequent. There was one in fish only a few weeks ago with a ton of large angels in a tank that couldn't of been more than 150g with all sorts of aggression going on. You try and mention that to someone and they get a offended like " how dare you" when all I can think is "how could you"

why do all you people think your the fish whisper. if the guy wants to get a tang, go for it. it will be harder in a smaller tank, but not impossible. tangs can live in a 4 foot tank or a 6 foot. I have a friend who has a tommi, a purple tang and a hippo for over 5 years in a 90. they are all living and fine. the bottom line is any fish you keep several years healthy and growing is ok in my book.
 
This particular type of response isn't "fish whispering". It's basic and valid guidelines for being a decent aquarist, especially for certain species like tangs.

The "fish whispering" is usually what is sought in the aftermath of compromised situations and ignored advice such as that given in this thread.

Insufficient tank size and overstocking are two of the most common and unnecessary/avoidable factors in being an aquarist.

I guess this is where we disagree. Your advise isn't good advise. Would you tell someone to get a shark if they had a 75g tank knowing that it will never be able to be housed there long term? I hope your answer is no, and if it is what is the difference between that and keeping a hippo and a yellow tang in a 75g? To your point of tangs "can" live in a 4ft tank, yes they can but they can also live in a 5g bucket and neither are ideal. I think that most of us get a pet and want to provided the best care and conditions for our said pet, if you don't then you don't need a pet
 
first a tang isnt a shark, second a tang will not live for 5 years in a 5 gallon bucket. while we might not agree on what size tank a tang can live in. witch is fine, this is America. but if your going to use examples please make them good ones. . yes if they had 8 inch sharks i would tell people a 75 gallon was enough. i would tell them there might be challenges. yes bigger fish in little tanks are harder to keep. you have to feed them a lot witch makes waste, if you are on top of water changes and filtration and other stuff, disaster will be sure to follow, but to say its impossible or cruel. i just don't agree . to say a fish is stressed is incorrect, a stressed fish doesn't live 5 years in a tank. especially saltwater fish. fish dont get happy or sad. there not people or dogs. while fish do feel pain, do feel stress, do have some emotions, doesnt mean they feel everything we do. heck even dogs arent people. to many people try to turn there dogs into babies. they arent . most of the time it leads to a monster dog.

i love when they say you wouldnt keep a great dane in a tiny apartment. i am like that makes no sense. dogs need exercise. not big houses. you can have a mansion but if you dont exercise your dog with walks and play it doenst mean a thing

Its about giving good, sound advise to someone who isn't educated on this forum and what your doing is arguing why a small tank will work. For the record a tang will live many years in something undersized... Go back to what you said about the 90g. Saying a fish that lives in a tank thats too small for it for 5 years doesn't mean the fish isn't stressed, they don't always die from stress just like people don't. To the dog point, they are companions not something to be locked in a cage outside and left to live its life there. Our your childrens rooms just big enough for them to turn around in? I didn't think so. Just because you don't think a fish or animal deserves better, doesn't mean they don't
 
You make no sense. Not going to go back and forth on this. My kids are not my fish. I never said leave a dog in a cage. I said house size doesn't mean anything with a dog. Plus you really going to say a 6 foot tank is 2 small but 8 is great. I don't think my kid cares if his room is 12 feet or 14 feet

So are you suggesting the OP or your friend with the 90g take their fish on walks? Your analogy doesn't really work, tank size is tank size is... You can't make a 90g or a 75g any bigger no matter how you cut it

Never said anything about a 6ft tank being too small but a 8ft one was big enough (for the record larger is always better). 75g is too small for a hippo long term period, there is no way to spin this to make it ok. Clearly you know best, see if they will start a sticky with your suggestions on tang keeping
