Tang for 3 foot cube

Adding a tang to your tank size isnt a great idea. They tend to be very aggressive as there is not enough volume of water for the fish to swim through. Why are you looking at only a tang? There is other sweet fish to fill the void. :) Believe me, once you add that tang, forget about adding other tankmates.
this can be true

I dunno! Certainly wouldn't put a potentially large tang or a big swimmer into a 36 cube, but a Kole could certainly work as could a smaller yellow, at least for a while.

The "for a while" part is what gets me. Maybe I'm in the minority in that I get fish and plan to keep them for the duration of their lives. It seems irresponsible to me to buy a fish and then dump him when he starts to grow too big for the tank... puppy isn't cute anymore syndrome. Some people work out agreements their the LFS and they will constantly trade in the tang for a smaller version, which is fine! There is planning involved in that and an arrangement made with the store.

A kole would be so so in that tank. They can be a little bit feisty for a bristletooth and I've seen outright mean Kole tangs. This tendency would be amplified if in a small tank. I would strongly urge the OP towards a Tomini if he chooses a tang.

Well I have a dirty secret I will share. I have a blue hippo and I purchased him when he was a inch and a half in length. I put him in a 55g for a year. Next year, I added another tank which was a 90g tank. The following year I purchased another tank 125g which he is currently housed in. Currently he is 7-8inchs in length. It's almost time to upgrade the tank again. So I'm thankful that I purchased this fish and upgraded along the way. My better half allowed me to keep each tank. ;) lol

Essentially what I am getting at, don't purchase a fish with the intention of getting rid of it when it's to big. That's not fair. How would you like to be traded to another home when you are 16 years of age? Do you know what I am getting at? We (Reefers) are essentially their "god"/"maker". It is your job to ensure your kids are doing okay! If you can't take care of the kids properly, don't have kids.

Noooooo!!! You have a blue hippo in a 125??!!!??? Get him out FAAAAST! Who in the world would put a tang that requires a chunk of the ocean and throw him in a 125! All tangs belong in the ocean! Shame on you! jk :fun2:

lollllll.... :). I purchased the tang not caring about what people say because I knew I would be upgrading along the way..... Now I have a collection of reefs in my basement however I wouldnt purchase a tang to keep it for a bit then sell it.... no point.

Let's see them tanks then? lol. I assume you have a 8ft x 8ft cube being delivered to your door atm? It's unethical to put a tang in a 125, I must say. Get'em out FAST! He might go Rogue and eat all your corals! jk lol

I have a 10g nano, 55g softie, 90g SPS and a 125g fish only at the moment..

Ill take a picture of the fatty.. i mean tang tonight and will post. :)

I just added a blue throat last night. Currently in the 125, there is the hippo, six line , false clown mated pair.

I love the six line....such a [profanity] disturber. This morning I saw him charge full speed into the hippo and ran away after he smashed him. The six line of course runs away and hides in the rock work poking his head out to taunt him... lol

In case you couldn't tell from the video, there was something wrong with the fish. It wasn't a cute trick. He was breathing heavily and darting around - obviously quite stressed, possibly from a parasitic infection. Maybe I'm the only one that isn't really appreciating the sarcasm.

JCWR53 - Good job upgrading. That is the responsible thing to do.

I'm getting a little tired of people shouting "TANG POLICE" when someone asks what the best tang is for a 3' cube. Apparently thinking about what is best for the fish is looked down upon... FWIW, angels need space too. I suppose you see nothing wrong with this

Thank you....I'm not prepared to give up a family member (if I may) because I was short on providing him with a decent home. I even try to purchase all fish that are captive bread instead of the ocean. I only buy frags from other people as well instead of the fish store.

I'm tired of the tang police as well... If you cannot provide a decent home, don't buy it. It's very simple however lack of research causes this. As you said, buy a fish that will thrive not survive.

Shame on the OP for wanting to put 9 full grown tangs, angels, and butterflies in his 36x36 cube! lol

It really gets me how selfish people can be. Think about the fish as something disposable that if it doesn't work out they can just get rid of it. The best advice I have received so far starting out in the hobby is to first determine the biggest tank you can afford. Then determine what you want... ie, FO, reef, etc. Then with the size of the tank and equipment you plan on buying figure out livestock and their needs, NOT like it appears most people do.

Buy a tank get it cycled then say " what kInd of tang can I get in a 3x3 cube". You definitely bought the cart before the horse. Best of luck but it's unfortunate that people do this.

If you'd read the whole thread you would understand I don't have this tank but was planning in building one with these dimensions. So there's no cart before the horse. I was really looking for tangs that don't need as much room like zebrasomas. There usually put in standard 4 foot 100 gallon tangs. Ex: mr saltwater tanks 90 gallon with a purple tang. I just thought a 3 foot cube with 50 plus inches of diagonal swim space room to go circles around the tank would be better then a 4 for long tank.

By all means, you can buy and put a small tang in there however he will out grow that tank and something will be needed in the near future. If you do not have plans to do this, then don't buy the fish. That's all were saying.

Happy reefing!

I just thought a 3 foot cube with 50 plus inches of diagonal swim space room to go circles around the tank would be better then a 4 for long tank. It's supposedly unnatural for tangs to turn around as said by another so in a 4ft long tank tangs are forced to learn how to do back flips instead lol
