Tang for a 90g

I'm looking to keep a Hippo Tang in my 90g (48"L) and am looking for the best match, I found a juvenile 1" but am wary the 90g might be a bit small as he matures.

Any advice on what might work (other species), and isn't a picky grazer?? Or would the tank be enough for the Hippo as he grows??

Thanks

Hippo will get too large eventually. Yellow tang, Purple tang.. are some choices.. powder blue tang, gold rim tang are a couple others. TBH they will all eventually get too large and will need a larger tank soon enough.

stay away from the powder blue, gold rim, or other acanthurus. Some get far to large and they are all very avid swimmers, far more than most tangs. They will go stir crazy in a tank that small for too long. I would stick with the purple, yellow, or you may want to consider a bristletooth family... kole, cheveron, or tomini-all great tangs that can do better in smaller tanks.

I'm a big fan of scopas - they stay relatively small and seem to be less aggressive than some tangs (mainly yellows and purples.) Very subtle beauty also. Just my $.02

Thanks everyone for the feedback, I thought the 90 was going to be tight quarters for the Hippo...

Any problems with the one spot foxface??

Great selection on what I could keep though. I'm interested in the

Tomini
Purple
2 spot bristletooth
one spot foxface (concerned w/ corals being nipped)

Any thoughts on which species is the "hog" of nuisance algae i.e. bubble, hair, diatom??

Thanks in advance...

+1 Tomini and Kole

I got one of those Spotted Yellow Eye Tang, just like the regular Kole but spotted. I like the yellow eye look of the Kole more then Tomini. And they are awesome grazer.

go with a sailfin, great looker and they would be happy in a 90 gallon, they arent to crazy of swimmers like the hippo, they get big, but, they will be happy in the 90 imo

They get massive and need massive tanks.

All bristletooth tangs eat alages and diatoms, ditritus, and other pesky growths that cover the glass, rocks, and substrate. There is a nice article about them in the back issues of the online reefkeeping magazine. The sailfin gets over 1' in length and NOT approprate for a 90gal. Also consider the cheveron tang. It is often considered the nicest looking of the bristetooths. I thing the adult form of bristletooths in important to consider, b/c they change color as they get older and some aren't very attractive, IMO.

omg, it will take years for the tang to get too big then just find him a new home, give him to someone with a much larger tank, just get whatever tang you like lol, get a juvenile and enjoy him for 4 years, then give him away to an aquarium or friend. lool

lol, you have a 90 gallon, there is no tang that i would not buy, asl long as it is a small juvenile, they do grow fast , but if it is small enough it will take years to out grow a 90g! by then you will probably have a 150 g anyways!

8th vote for the tomini :D

Mine is in a 90. hes about three as big as he was in this pic though

size of the fish has little to do with it. its swimming space. some days I feel like my 240 isnt enough for my 5" powder blue. Way different behavior than the tomini or kole.

i like tomini's/koles/ and i put a yellow in my tank.... i like the yellow mostly because it just pops out like crazy
