I purchased this guy about 2 weeks ago hoping he was a Bariene tang. But he is missing the black spot behind his eye that Bariene are known for. I'm not sure if this develops later since he is still very small 2.5 inches. Any ideas what he could be? He was sold as a Dussumeri tang which I'm certain he is not.

Not a tomini, although the current colors are close. It's not a ctenochaetus species for sure. I have been scuba diving around many tangs before and I'm pretty sure that until they're adults, or nearly so you won't get very defining coloration. Plus the two species mentioned are pretty similar and also get huge. 18" to 2 feet is entirely possible.

This is my Dussumeri in QT last year. Colors look nothing like this fish.

Really tough to tell from your pictures, is the body a solid color or is there line/markings on the body? What I didn't notice at first was the spike not being white. I think it is what you originally thought after examining the pictures on a computer and not my phone. Bariene, sorry I told you a Dussumeri

Fowleri is my guess. White tail on fowleri but not duss. But yes absence of horseshoe also strange
But still think it’s fowleri
