Tangs in a 90g...

Would it be a bad idea to stock a Yellow tang and Purple tang in the same 90 gallon tank? They are my favorite two tangs and luckily for me they're two of the smaller ones. I've seen more than that in a 75 gallon, but I'm not about to stock unhappy fish. Hoping for the tang police to shed an opinion .

Zebrasoma flavescens, Yellow Tang, 75 gal (285l).
Zebrasoma xanthurum, Purple Tang, 100 gal (380l).

That being said, I would not try it myself. A yellow OR a purple tang would do fine in there by themselves though.

You would really be rolling the dice if you were to try both. Both tangs would have to be extremely mild mannered for it to work.

I would go with a small purple and a slight larger yellow, as the purple would be a little too aggressive. I have had both in my tank at the same time before and they seem to do fine. Good luck if you should decide to do so.

I agree with Euod as I currently have both in my 225g and although the Yellow is slightly bigger, the aggression on the Purple has let the Yellow know who's boss. They were both added at the same time and they rarely have any disputes now. Having said that, I would not advice that you place both in a 90g tank, one or the other would be perfectly fine though.

Ya I've seen it done, but the purple was definatly trying to take over. I think I will go with the yellow and save my money on the purple and get a nice angel of some sort. Thanks for the advice.

in a 90 I would go with a yellow and a kole, a powder brown might work too, they are not overly aggressive.

Fact is your system is not big enough for two tangs to be happy, survive yes, plus you will have other fish and corals tanking up real estate. I know you are more than likely going to go with whatever you want in the end but you have to consider the bio-load on your system.

Chocolate is a good choice in a 90G tank.

Multiple zebrasoma tangs is very doable in larger tanks, but not in a 90G. To keep them happy, you would have to feed them so much that it could ruin your reef or bankrupt you doing water changes and buying GFO.

Trust me when I tell you that one tang is plenty for a 90. In one 90 gallon tank I have a Regal and in another 90 a yellow. Tangs require lots of room and really tax the bioload. Mine are not even full grown but will be moved to larger tanks long before they are.

When I first started this hobby with a mere 15 gallon I had three fish in it... A 1" yellow tang, a 1" powder brown, and a true percula clown.. unfortunately both tangs died of Ick while on a business trip but they got along fine.. were in there for 5 - 6 months with not one dispute.. that might be the way to go.

Are you suggesting that your fish died because you were out of town?
Is that a current stock list for your 50g you have under 'current tanks'?
