Tank Crash

Im out of town right now for a family emergency and I just got a call from my roommate saying he came home to all my fish dead today. My neighbor in the complex said the power went out for almost 8 hours. Im soooooo sad, ive had some of those fish for a long time and they even knew me by sight. Lost yellow, hippo, and powder blue tangs, flame, dusky, and singapore angels, my trio of squareback anthias, pair of onyx clowns, pair of firefish, clown goby, and mandarin. Even my 3 fire shrimp died. Only things to survive are the hermits and a tiny watchman goby. I think I am going to have to order these fish online because I do not want to shell out all the extra dough at the lfs. Has anyone had any experience in ordering fish online? What are the best sites? Also I need to order a generator. Any suggestions appreciated.

Sorry to hear that.
How are your parameters? When my tank crached ihad to do 3 or 4 water changes in a week. That was because of the dead corals. You did not mention them. Are you running a FOWLR?

Bummer man. I've suffered a 4 hour crash in which my return pump outlet siphoned off the top third of my frag tank exposing a bunch of frags. Lesson learned. You can get vortech powerheads that have backup powersupply units. They're pricey, but so is replacing your livestock.

bummer that really sucks, however i might have a helpful bit of info, i will be converting my 220 gallon saltwater tank into a fw planted and will have quite a few fish for sale including a yellow and vlamingi tangs as well as a fat mandarin. best of luck in your recovery

Yes its a fowlr, Im sure my parameters are horrible, wont be able to check till wed. My roommate got the watchman goby and all the hermits out and took them to my moms and put them in her tank. He sais theres still tons of copepods and amphipods that are still alive, so thats good.

Thanks man, let me know. Im just bummed that because of my quarantine procedure im looking at about 5 weeks before I have any fish in my tank. Then I have to go through all the trouble of introducing them in the proper order and hoping they get along again. It took me sooo long to get 3 pygmy angels that would tolerate each other.

Really sorry ...... hard to comprehend that so much love, time, and money can be destroyed in so little time.

Oh dear - I'm so sorry to hear it. :(
Stories like this are what prompted my generator thread earlier.

Its not efficient but you can run some stuff with a
12VDC/120VAC 400W inverter from your car cigarette lighter/power plug
We experimented with 2 inverters
Seems like we got more power from the Toyota Tacoma 400W inverter
than we did from a plug-in 400W inverter in the minivan
Neither one would run everything by itself.
The Tacoma powered the lights (Solaris LED) & powerheads but not the main pump or heaters.

Of course it's hard to go shop for generators while your vehicle is idling in the driveway. Hardly a good option but it could tide you over for an hour or two.
I'm wishing I had bought the propane 3KW genset that was onsale at Costco for $800.

Of course none of this does you a bit of good while out of town - or even at work. That scares the stuff out of me. Someone should invent a little monitor that would text you if the power to your tank went out. Hmmmm....

well, keep in mind you don't need to run your lights for a blackout. At least not the kind we have here. You can have your lights out for 3 days at least with no problems. People do it all the time for cyano!

I had a 22 hour blackout a couple of years ago, and ran some of the pumps off an inverter from the car. I also slept in the car because it was over 100 in the house! I just ordered some penn plax b11's for this year (air pumps that only go on when the power is off.) It seems to me, the main worry is the fish suffocating. If you can stop that, then you can last for quite a while. I highly recommend them now that monsoons are upon us!

Sorry for your loss, live aquaria's divers den is great for ordering fish online.

+1

The LA marine fish menu (not divers den menu) are drop shipped from Quality Marine. You could ask your favorite LFS to place an order from them since they are the same fish. If you go this route I would ask the LFS to price match with LA since you would be making a large purchase.

Yeah, your tank will be fine for several days with no lights. It's temperature and water movement you need to be concerned about.

Really? Ive heard some great things about quality marine in the last couple days. I will definetly pick up any fish at the lfs that they will price match.

give it some time to sort it out, i was near breakdown when mine crashed, but after it all settled, i got back in. think of it as a clean slate to do what you always wanted but wasnt compatible with whay you already had. now you can give it a shot.
