i have 6 acro colonys and my favorite one has white spots on it where flesh is gone how bad do you think it will get. my tank dont ever go above 78 degrees. have you ever had this happen and will it get worse over the next couple days. i am so mad at myself forgot to turn the fans on before i left for work. in a hurry :( :( :( :( :mad2: :mad2: :(

I am not sure how bad it will get, but here is a tip, before I got my temp controler I plugged the fans into the timer the lights were plugged into so I never had to worry about turning them on and off.

Sorry to hear about your tank,
Whiskey

I too have my 4 fans on the same timer as the MH's. One day I had them unplugged for something the night before and I think the tank got up to 82 or so but everything was just fine.

got my fingers crossed for you. There's really nothing you can do except prepare if you start to get some RTNs, then get ready to frag, run carbon, and w/c...

I have a freind that owns a LFS that keeps his at 83 and he has great growth and almost 0% loss. IMO, and I guess in his too, I don't see any problems in that BUT ONLY FOR A SHORT PERIOD.

86 shouldn't cause too much harm if that's an accurate reading. I have my fans on a timer to come on an hour before my lights come on to get rid of any moisture and to go off an hour after lights turn off. Investing in a timer is definitely a good idea.

should i move her down to a lower rock she is at the top of the tank. she's mad at me right now. do you think this will help or make it worse.

Don't despair, back in january- my house ac went awol and my tank temperature reached 85. Today, most all the corals are still with me.

I would say 86F is not very hot. In my summer time, my tank hitted 86F for a few hours everyday. I didn't lose anything from this.

Not sure how bad things might be. You'll have to keep an eye out. For reference, I've had my tank hit 87 many times before (during the summer) without any ill effects, but my corals were used to temps of 82-84 during the day. I'd expect corals accustomed to 78 probably wouldn't tolerate 86 very well (usually corals have problems at 4-6 degrees F above what's normal for them, so absolute temp. must be taken in context).

Good luck,

cj

things are much better today . she got a little color back. a frag rtn'ed but stoped half way down. thought it was weird as i watch the flesh peel off, and then stop. but got the timers on and learned a important lesson ( dont wait to put stuff on when you have it, make the time) thank you all josh

During the summer mine would constantly hit 85 and 86. As long as it is stable with no major swings, no issues there. 86 imo is pushing it though but I never had any RTN.

Hmmm, curious...is it common for an Acropora to go through shutdown rxn (RTN) when exposed to high temps? I've never seen this nor heard of it to be honest; bleaching yes, most certainly, but never outright death.

best,

cj

I purposley try to run my tanks at 82-84, so when/if it does hit 86, the worst thing that happens is a little faster growth. Sometimes the algae growth is also a little faster :D

It's more a matter of the temp swing than the actual temp. Read Shimeks book regarding average reef temps and optimal temps. Page 15. In the winter months I run down 78-81 regularly with 81-85 summer with some really hot days the a/c can't even keep the house feeling too cool when it's 95-105 with heat index of 110-125 outside and it may even get 87 or 88. Looking at the tank nothing seems to even care. Some reefs will even get up in the low 90's at low tide.
