im currently in the middle of the project from hell. i rinsed the substrate (argonite/crushed coral) but the water is still cloudy. ive never used bagged substrate b4 i got the batch in my current tank on my fl. vac. is this cloudiness normal? it actually makes foam on the surface.

What type of substrate did you buy and what type of filter are you using? I had cloudy water at first when i installed the sand, but it cleared up mostly in one day and completely in two. I am just using an emperor 400 and wasn't even skimming at the time.

Totally normal. Have the water run through some filter floss if you want it to clear up fast. Otherwise it will most likely take a few days to clear up.

Yeah its normal, you really gotta rinse the living crap outta that stuff and even then its still a bit cloudy... It'll settle after a day or two...

ok, ill give a day or 2 before i throw a fit. i only have one good filter (marineland magnum 350)thats still being used in my current tank. but im using a tiny filter that came with my 10 gal quarantine tank. im kinda at a stand still till i can see to start stacking live rock . my old tank id in the middle of the roon half full.being powered by lead cords because the best place for the new 1 is right where the old 1 was.im gonna call it a night have a few beers and pick up tommorow after work.

This happened to me when I first set up my tank. I think it was cloudy for two days. Then on the 3rd morning when I turned the lights on, it was crystal clear. Just give it time. If you can't filter it, then let it sit with no water movement. This will help the finer particles settle out.

It settles when it has bacteria on it's surface. Totally normal. I've never rinsed the sand to try to get rid of the dust. I remember reading way back that you actually want the fine dust as part of the composition. Throwing in live rock will do the trick as mentioned.

It will cloud until the growth of bacteria begins to bind the fine particles to the substrate. A few days. Doesn't matter whether you rinse or not: it's still going to cloud.

as sk8r says it may cloud again as this is a lack of bacteria new tank syndrome. keep stock low ...feed min. or very little and just let the cycle occur. time is key. test for ammonia spike after a few weeks. a must for a complete cycle...as bacteria growth reduces the ammonia and becomes established. very important. what you speak of is normal. dont add stock except for cycle fish like damsels. and test test test for ph swings at night and ammonia....this is all you need to monitor to ensure the tank is stable for cycle to occur in 6 to 8 weeks.
