Tank-O-death

I have the controller programmed (when a low water level is detected) to turn off the skimmer as well as all halides and UV. So far it works great

Excellent, will it shut off the return pump(s) as well?

Actually, no. The idea is ....if the skimmer is dumping water down the drain.... the controller (through the float switch) will shut off the skimmer to prevent the sump from getting too low. I need my two return pumps to continue cyclying water through the sump to keep the tank cool (chillers are on closed loop through the sump). If I lost water from a plumbing failure rather than a skimmer failure.....and the sump completely drains anyway....the controller (through the float switch) also will turn off all the halides and UV preventing an over-heating situation. The sequence return pumps are air cooled and can sit there cavitating without harm. But, if they were harmed, I keep spares on hand anyway.

You've already got your tank looking that good?!? I guess it is true that any tank you touch turns to gold.

I was looking forward to an upgraded cold water though =)

After this and a few purchases....the tank looks like this today.....still under-whelming.....but a start.

It's a good start....if you're goal is duplicating the reefs of Cozumel! I'm completely blown away by your aquascaping and technical skills. Great job of rolling with the punches.

Sherman and I visited with Steve before the NorthWestern Coral Farmers market yesterday and also met up with Dang there. We were truly amazed at Steve's tank recovery in such a short time.

The fish looked great, anemones healthy and happy, and lots of great coral colonies. Although Steve will downplay his tank... his talent truly shows in what is a fabulous reefscape. The "colony" I gave him is actually one of the smallest in the tank!! He has also kept alive the beautiful purple polyped monti frag that was all that was left of a nearly dinner plate sized piece after a month of battling STN in my own system. My policy is to frag colonies soon after inroduction into my system in the case of an "event" and I was glad to send this one back with Steve. One day I will get a piece back! :D

Here are a few pictures with Steve's permission. Please keep in mind that these were taken with a POS camera, no tripod, half the lighting was on, and all pumps were on.

His cold water tank "experiment" is coming along very nicely and is quite impressive as well.

Hey - I'm sorry to ask questions about a hard time but I wondered if you had any idea what killed stuff?

Surely tap water+dechlorinator isn't going to kill stuff? I used tap water on my tank without dechlorinator for months and corals were fine. I just want to make sure I don't do something to kill my tank now - since I'm using tap water.

Thanks~

I do not feel that it was the tap water....I feel that the five year old plus bottle of dechlorinated morphed into something disagreeable to SPS and softies. I'm also not discounting the possibility that I could have overdosed the stuff too in the heat of the moment.

Thanks for taking the time to answer me. Your tank is truly amazing!! I hope I can someday have a tank even half that amazing!!!

I guess I'll be careful when I use the stuff from now. I've also decided to use seachem stability whenever I do water changes as well.

Your tank is what really got me anxious to get started in this hobby... and I couldn't believe that worm you found!! It still gives me nightmares!!

Good luck with everything in the future!!
