Tank-O-death

Nope...that's not it. I don't see it on the website. In the store, it came in two small bottles that were equal two parts....I can't remember the name though.

I thought that I would do a final update on this topic for closure. I finally finished installing the float switch today. The float switch is an inexpensice float switch from Macmaster. I extended the wires from the float switch through a clear acrylic tubing and filled the tubing with a black pourable epoxy. The switch was then plugged into the interface box from Neptune which allows the float switch to talk to my controller. I have the controller programmed (when a low water level is detected) to turn off the skimmer as well as all halides and UV. So far it works great....and since that I completely drain my sump once a month during water changes, I can test the float switch monthly. Here's a pic of the finished float switch which just hangs down into the sump. Total cost was $40.

Steve:

I am glad to see that my suggestion of the float switch a few months back came to life and is in place. Awesome to see that things are slowly getting back into shape too. The only small suggestion I have for you based for what you said in a couple of pages back is to at some point in the future re-do your close loops so that one of them pumps though the chiller instead of being in a close loop in the sump. The live stuff is in the tank and not the sump, so you could still isolate the sump completely and have cool water in your tank. It might be minor, but it is something worth thinking about.

Again, congratulations on having things running nicely again.:D

Seeing these pictures has made me anxious to start over with a new tank. Thanks for keeping this thread going.

any updates? loved your old tank so much before it crashed. i cant see any of the pics you took, only Jnarowe's so i would love to see new pics

Nope....no updates....I left the hobby last October to pursue some business opportunities......which I felt no guilt in accepting since the tank was kind of so-so at the time. I broke down the tanks and moth-balled everything until my return. I plan to re-enter the hobby with a little larger system later this year. Right now, I'm enjoying not having a tank. I decided to leave up my website for now....since it is pre-paid.

Thanks for that Steve. There is no reason for your site to go away, even if your tank is broken down.

I look forward to seeing your next tank. I'm sure it will be amazing.

Thanks everyone......I do miss the tanks; but, I'm also enjoying the break. I also took the opportunity to fix up the garage a bit too. I always wanted to repaint the garage and install a commercial epoxy floor....something that could never be done while the tank was running. When the decision was made to take a break....I brought my crew over.....and went from this:

The future plans are to increase the main tank's size to something in the 2000 gal range and add a coldwater tank in the 400 gal range. I may not not even go back into the wall. I may just stay in the garage with a large peninsula concept for the main tank. I really want to try a few things differently this time with...

1) minimal piping
2 no closed loops....only wavemaking and surge devices
3) better power efficency
4) better access
5) more open aquascaping
6) maybe employ a bit of natural light since my garage has windows that get direct sunlight

Wheeew! Thought for minute there we lost ya. Looking forward to your new adventure. I can say that I tore my last system down and sold off just about everything. I am back now, trying a few different things as time and $$ permit.

Wow Steve, talk about a fast change. The fixed up garage looks great, but strangely empty.

What did you do with the tank and gear, put it in storage?

Please leave your website up indefinitely. Your tank/website is literally one of the pinnacles of the reefing hobby, and is a fantastic resource for ideas, inspiration, and good old fashioned AWE. Your website is a beautiful memorial to arguably the best privately owned reef tank in the world.

Anyway, enjoy your break, you've earned it. As you contemplate your new setup, remember that there are literally thousands of reefers like me, who you've never met, who you have inspired and motivated with your fantastic piece of the ocean.

Cheers!
