Tank of the Month - February 2004

Thanks everyone. I do have to say that i scan the forums quite often and look at the pictures of your tanks and corals too and it is nice to be recognized by all you experts out there. I always look at the pics and empty the drool cup. I guess I could install a small overflow on it.
I'm sorry for the late reply to some questions. Corporate america gets in the way of my hobby sometimes.

Kevinpo- The 300 gal has been setup for 2 1/2 years. Most of the corals came from my 120 gal that was packed. I had the 120 running for 4 years before the big move.

Nvert- I love the cardinals! I spent a few hours looking for babies last night and came up empty. If I could train the pappa to swim into the net and release them I would save a lot of time. The beer companies would lose some sales though. We have third generation kids now, I just need to research the genetic problems that may happen within the family.
Todd- When I decided to get the new tank, I should say it was approved after lots of "honey do lists" were completed, I couldn't get a very big tank down the stairs in our house. So I measured the window and had it built the dimensions it could fit through the window. The size of the room was an issue also. The dimensions are 30"w x 24"h x 8' long.

Thanks again!

Cris

Tank of the Month -- February 2004

Well, I looked high and low for an existing thread on February's Tank of the Month and couldn't find one. Sooooo, I'm starting this one :D

Cris,
That is one beautiful tank. Of all the featured tanks I've seen in RK Mag, it's the one I'd most like mine to be like. Like you, I really like the mixed reef look. It appears that you have a very large Sarcophyton and possibly a Sinularia mixed in with Acros and other SPS. Besides the things you mentioned in your article, are there any other tips/tricks/secrets/advice for keeping a mixed reef. How do you deal with the slime of the leathers when they "shed their skin"?
Thanks,
Mariner

Heya Mariner. LOL.. it's right at the top of the Reef Discussion forum every month. And I'll move your post into that thread now for ya. :D

I'd followed the link from the RK article, done a search.....
BTW, has anybody seen my glasses?

That is a beautiful tank !!! Could you please share your carbon regimen? like quantity used and frequency? Thanks, Mike.

Chris, is your frag grow out tank seperate from your main tank? I can't quite tell in the pictures.

PS Awesome tank!

Congradulations Cris!

For everyone else. Pictures just do "NOT" do this tank any justice! I have had the pleasure of visiting Cris and his tank is simply amazing!

Well deserved, and awesome Tank of the Month!

Great tank! I am new to the hobby and always heard that you cannnot put angels in a reef aquarium. You have two.
Did you have any difficulties initially? I would like to know as I plan to have them in my tank.

Thanks again everyone! I'm sorry it took so long to reply to your questions. I've been busy with work and family.

My water changes average to be about 10 gal per week. Mostly because I sell frags to local reefers and supply a couple of LFS some of thier frags. I change my carbon every two weeks and put in about four cups at a time. I have been switching the amount to see the results that I get. I have never seen the skin off the sarcho leathers land on any other coral and cause damage. It has been a long time since I've seen them shed at all. There are times that I have to move corals in anticipation of stinging. It's funny that I've always kept a mixed reef with no ill effects and had only heard little concerns of the chemical warfare issue. I hear a lot more about it now and it makes sence but I have not experienced it myself. Of course there is a large pecking order of corals when there is contact. My #1 enemy is xenia elongata. The encrusting long polyped kind. It seems to win the touching battle on a lot of other corals. Mushrooms are killers also. Not only to sps corals but I had a green hairy mushroom uproot a sizeable flower anenome. I couldn't belive the stinging tenticles didn't melt the mushroom away. Sorry I got on a little roll there. The angels have been with me for 3 years now. They have never caused any problems but I do see that the flame angel is really interested in the clown eggs and fights with the female clown quite a bit. I have heard from other reefers that thier flame angel nipped at all the corals but mine has not. My *** tank is a 58 gallon that is seperate but plumbed into the main system. I have a small 40 gal breeder for the softie frags that is a seperate system

Thanks again to you all for the interest and compliments.

Cris
