well my girl just got to hawaii. lucky her. but i was thinking of having her get me a used tank. i live in chicago land area and cant find a cheap tank. so if she is down there then why not. also her cuz is with this guy that brings people out so might get one if i am lucky also.

does any one know if she couold bring in lugage? to much wait looks like a prob to me?

or just have her ship it to me if she does get one?

any one bring one to hawaii and back home?

thanks Jeremy

less about weight and more about pressurized canister in an unpressurized compartment under the plane...

i doubt she could bring it, and even if they would let her, i doubt i would bring one onboard...

Per the TSA and FAA
You can bring a scuba tank in your checked baggage, however it must be empty and the valve removed from the tank. This is for inspection inside the tank because Xray's can't see in it.

And why would you ever want to buy a used tank from HI or even worse FL? Brand new AL 80's run in the mid 100's or less. Remember thats a 3000 PSI bomb on your back, better know where it came from and that its tested and inspected. If you do want to buy used I would buy from the great lakes region, fresh water is much easier on a tank than saltwater. Most tanks used in commercial dive service in FL don't even see a hydro before they fail vis for corrosion.

Also do not buy a AL tank made before 1987, most of these tanks will fail hydro and vis inspections. The grade of aluminum used tends to stress crack.

WOW thanks a lot fppf. this all makes more sence now why not to get one from there. also can any tank that can handel 3000 psi and also handle the valve work? like small welding tanks. are they the same?
b/c i could get one of them and just buy a j or k valve. and if so what do you think is better J or K thanks
Jeremy

Scuba cylinders and industrial gas cylinders are very different.
The threads on a scuba cylinders are different than on industrial cylinders.

As for valve to use, I don't think you can even buy new J valves. K valves are now the standard, they should have went over them in your cert class.

thanks again fppf. i have not taken a class yet waiting for spring time. yea i would be better off with just a scuba tank

Just a tip for you. Don't worry about buying a tank right off the bat, instead get your own BC and Regs. Tanks and Weights can easily be rented, but having your own BC and Regs makes you more confident in your equipment and makes your diving cheaper in the long run. I only use my own tanks for about 10 dives out of 100 per year.

While I agree to get tanks last, we use our own tanks a LOT.
It depends where you live and how you travel.
We dive a lot in our local area, tons of really good diving.
We also drive to the NE coast so we bring our own tanks then too.

Get your cert and while your taking the class your local shop can help you with the correct equipment. There are a lot of little things you don't know yet.

thanks guys good idea. i was told i cant rent untill i am cert. a tank that is. i have all the other equipment already even a computer. got it all for a awesome price. i could have got a tank but didnt want to pay for shipping and didnt have the money at the time. thanks agian

Um, you are not plaining on trying to dive without a cert are you?

DON'T DO IT!!

Your basic primal instincts will kill you.
You should not even have bought the gear without a cert, you don't even know what to buy or why to buy it.

Please do not use that gear until you start you class with an instructor. Just holding your breath while on scuba can kill you, and that is a natrual thing your body tells you to do. You really need proper training to dive safely.

This bears repeating.

A large part of the certification program is lots of supervised pool training to unlearn the basic mammalian instincts invovled with submerging onelself in the water and to instill new instincts that are needed to dive safely using compressed air, as well as the needed skills to handle problems. These are things that can only be learned with constant drilling.

It would be ok to repeat it a third time too.

Also to expand on it, you need to keep up your skills.
Ask your self when the last time you practiced mask clearing, out of air drills, regulator retrival and clearing???? Skills that are not used a lot get rusty, last thing you want to be is rusty if something happens.

o i would not go at all with out being cert. got the stuff and my grand fatehr said it would all be good for my size he has been diving for like 30 years. but i am waiting till spring to get cert. i just wanted to get all the gear so i dont have to pay for stuff during class and then also i will be training in my own gear. thanks for the concern and i would not even go under till i am good and ready at the age o 22 i am not ready to die diving.
