tank-raised VS. wild

Hi. I have heard from many people and lfs that tank-raised clowns are sterile and cant lay eggs at all. The lfs told me that if i wanted to attempt breeding that i needed to have a wild caught pair to have any success. Can you please clear this up for me? Also is it possible to have a tank-raised clown and a wild one to pair up and have fertile offspring? If you can please post pics of tank-raised clowns with their eggs.Thank-you!

Gotta love fish porn.... Total myth!!! Buy tank raised.

If you are a die hard breeder and want optimum stock then you have to go wild caught and be prepared to battle everything that comes with a wild clown.

Well, below is a pair that I have had for ten years and shown are the eggs they laid last week. They have breed countless times. Their eggs always hatch and their fry are strong and healthy. The female was tank raised and the male was wild caught. I would always buy tank raised if given the choice. In this hobby there are a lot of myths and over-generalizations.

What has occassionally happened, or so I have been told (see, another possible myth) is that a lfs gets a bunch of young clowns from the same brood and sometimes two individuals from this collection don't breed successfully because of the close genetic relationship between them. Of course, this too could be BS.

Yup, that too is BS. Black Ocellaris, as an example, are inbred to a high degree in the US. That is why there is so many with gill plate, head, and jaw deformities.

I don't understand... Why are tank bred fish inbred... the spawning fish live a long time?

Total BS.
However, if you want to bree your fish, you should get the best fish and get them genetic diverse as possibe.
Here are my clowns. One for Premium Aquatics and one from a breedier in Houston.

I did not say all tank bred fish are inbred, just the black ocellaris bloodline. It is due to tight collection restraints in Australia not allowing fresh clowns to be collected. As for spawning pairs living a long time, it is not unheard of to have a 15-20 year old pair.

Just re itterating what everyone else said. I gave a friend a pair of tank raised true percs ... 4 months later they were laying eggs in his tank.

If you are however serously intersted in breeding and raising fry get jocye wilkerson's book on breeding clowns, read up...decide if you think you can do it first.

Personally I'm against breeding brother and sister ... I would not get 2 clowns from the same collection date because more than likley if they are young they are bother and sister.

If your gonna go for CB thats a whole other post going on what atticus said.
CB black and white's breeding are a rare occurance & very inbred
CB true and false percs breed more frequently but you'd probably have to order online to be sure to get it from 2 different blood lines unless you dont care about inbreeding and shortening the gene pool.

Since you "bull****ted" so many other comments, I have to say that the above statement is bull**** too. LOL There are fresh clowns and other marine fish collected in Australia, just that the profit margin is not good enough to ship it to US.

From what I've read on an AU forum from a breeder down there, WC black o's are difficult to come by there as well. Probably not as difficult as here though. :(

no doubt WC black are not as easy to come by :)

But exporting AU fish is never an issue (as long as you have $ to pay for permit ... and all the troubles with the legality).

Alright now I am forced to BS your BS of my BS... :D

Like Chris said you can talk to any breeder in Australia about WC blacks and they will tell you how hard they are to come by. They are in a more protected area and few collections are done in that area. They are just plain hard to get ahold of, let alone the cost prohibitive factors and competition from the Japan market. So, we are stuck breeding our clowns bloodlines back into each other like the Royal family.

hhaha let's skip the BS. So how much are the Japanese willing to pay over there?
