tank ready for a dragonet?

so my tank has been up for a while now. I've been running a fuge with cheato and I see a bunch of pods always crawling all around the sandbed. when I look in my DT though I can never see any and I don't know if it's because they're just too far away, or I really don't have any in the display. I do have a six line which does nothing but stare at the rocks all day, but I'm not sure if he's getting anything haha.

is there any way to tell if pods are populated enough to support at dragonet? I'm not going to get one if my tank can't support it. my girl will be upset, but I'm not willing to put anything in the tank I can't take care of.

How long is a while now?
I see 125g in sig, how much LR?
Your sixline will be an issue, in more ways than one, but in this case it will be pod competition and will most likely bully a dragonet.

100lbs of rock minimum for a dragnet, and setup a yr is a good rule of thumb to start with. More and longer is always better.

I prob have 160lbs of LR now. I know Six lines are known to be some what aggressive but this one has been nothing but a model citizen. I didn't even think of the six line and dragonet not getting along honestly, but I guess it could happen.

my tank has been running since august so it's creeping on the year mark. I can always put the dragonet off and stock other fish. I would like to get a ruby red eventually if my tank could support it. I think they're awesome looking.

I would bet money that "model citizen sixline" will change his attitude towards those particular fish on intro, and I would suspect him to change towards others eventually.

I've had the six line for almost 2 years now, but I'm not saying it couldn't happen. you think even with 125g tank those 2 would be a problem?

I think you stand to risk trouble w/ any newcomers and especially newcomers that eat what it eats.

well I'm kind of shocked that a six line needs that much space, but i guess I can look into other fish like gobys.

i eventually gave my six line back to the LFS. he became a terror.

aside from the aggression the direct food competition could be an issue. i guarantee he is getting his share of pods.

that being said, it sounds like you've got an excellent setup going.

even with the fuge, size of the tank, and all the LR, have you looked in to supplemental feeding for your dragonet? it's a good thing to have in your back pocket to make sure they stay well fed, or if you were to have a pod crash or need to move tanks, to keep them going while number repopulate.

it can also be a fun little sidebar to the hobby, culturing phyto, pods, and baby brine shrimp.

what else do you have in your tank besides the six line? because him aside, it sounds like you've got a potentially nice home for dragonet.

Yes my sixline was a huge d*ck to any new fish I added to the tank! Whether that was a tang or parrotfish that were much bigger than him. You will see the behavior immediately, he will open his mouth and show his little teeth to any and all he is being aggressive towards. Lucky for me, mine committed suicide so no more problems with him. Now my Melenarus is starting to become a problem

I have a yellow tang, 3 Bartlett anthias, a royal gramma, 2 clowns, and in two-three weeks I'll be adding a pbt and a kole tang (they've been in QT). I was trying to think of the next thing to add. I'm starting to think I'll skip the dragonet and get an other trio of anthias instead though...

yeah I've had the six line for a long time now and I just never it getting aggressive. even in a 29g biocube he was fine. idk I'm not hellbent on this fish, my girl wants one so I thought a ruby red one would be cool. I'd much rather have a trio of fat heads or another anthias though...much more activity and color.

from one man with a girlfriend who wanted a dragonet, to another, it can buy you a lot of good will if you let them have "their" fish. :)

tank ready for a dragonet?

yeah we've been talking about every fish before I buy. we like mostly the same stuff so it's been working out so far. she also likes a lot of the corals in the tank. hopefully life is this smooth when we get married in 2 months 😛

need to count pods...get a red light flashlight and count pods in the middle of the night...mandys need an insane amount to thrive, somewhere around 150 an hour, if I remember correctly...
I agree with the others about the 6-line..could be a huge problem...

yeah I'm not doing the dragonet...I'd rather do another trio of anthias...or even a fairy wrasse. the dragonet isn't worth the hassle to me I don't think. i like not worrying about my tank, and it seems like I'd constantly be worrying if it's eating.
