Tank running hot

I decided to lback off on my central air which is at a constant 72degrees in an attempt to save a bit on my electric. I lowered raised the tempto 78 until i got home from work. I suppose because it was 78 in my house, the tank is running at 82.8. The Halides go on a a few hrs before i get home. I am worried that by the time the lights go off i will be at 85. If i opt to use a chiller what size should i get for a 90 gal. which is not going to be overkill. I am not familiar with chillers, what brand is recommended to put on the outside of my tank and not too noise? any suggestions.

As an alternative, have you considered running a fan on the tank. I run a fan on my 75G tank and it does really work, and is cheap, but your water evaporation goes way up though.

In order to get around the water evaporation, I installed an auto top off on my tank.

try a clip on fan over the sump. that will decrease the temp a few degrees. i had my 90 in my basement but i had a ac running in that room full time. a chiller is just going to cool off the tank and heat up the room. try fans over the sump first. ice frozen and put in the sump helps drop it a few degrees as well.

use plastic half gallon containers.

if you can get a small ac unit just for that room that in my opinion is better then a chiller. at least it cool the tank and you....

from my experiance around 85 things start dying. hermits, shrimp, then the corals. just make sure it doesn't get over 85.

I had mine at 89 a few times all all that died was two fish all my SPS, sofies, and LPS are doing great. But dont listen to me its just my experience :)

My tank generally goes higher than 85 in the summer and I don't worry about it at all.
If I think it will go much higher I keep two gallon jugs in the freezer. I put one in the tank in the morning and one at night. It lowers the temp in my 100 gallon by about two or three degrees.
Oh and by the way it if free and I have not lost a fish to heat since Nixon was President.

Thank you everyone for your advice, i love the Ice idea in the sump but unfortunately i have no room to put even a small plastic icepac for lunchboxes unless i put it in with my chaeto. Small sump since its a 90 bow, narrow sides. Anyway i think i i will look into a sleek fan or put RODI Ice Cubes in my sump for a real fast fix on moments notice. Maybe i will start cubing this weekend and make a 5lb bag. Again thanks and if it wasnt for everyone on RC i would be swimmin with the fish's

I seen some sleek clip on fan in Right Aid, Nice, i am going to hook them up tonight. its rectangular and used to clip on a desks, hopefully its powerful enough to drop a few degrees.
