That is true about the latent heat of evaporation. It is possible to cool the water to a lower temp than the surroundings.
MAKE SURE THE FAN BLOWS ACROSS THE WATER...NOT POINTED AT IT!!! You want the breeze to come into contact with as much surface area of the water as possible.

yeah my tank can be 80 and the room be 84-86 and it will stay at 80 with only just a 6 inch fan no problem.

I never had much success with fans, even when pointed directly at the water. In the last few weeks I simply couldn't get my temp below 84F.

The other thing that sucks about fans is the fact that you are increasing the humidity of the air.

I'm glad I have a chiller now.
Less top off required, and my hinges won't rust anymore.
