tank theme shift...

Just sayin'....mechanical finally got me, in the tank that survived an 8-day no-generator blackout in a snowstorm...so the damsel tank is, alas, history. The one survivor was too big to accept tankmates without a battle or deciding on lunch---so I found her another home, with regret, because she's pretty spectacular, and decided to do the opposite: little fishes, who will find the 105 gallon tank offers them pretty much as large a territory as they could hang onto in the wild. My projected population: firefish, royal gramma, pink margin wrasse, tailspot blenny, starry blenny, yellow watchman, pearly jawfish, mandy (when I build up the pod population), and maybe a pair or so of high-fin red stripe gobies, plus some little yellowtail damsels to keep things moving; or if I could come by some healthy ones, maybe chromis. The bennie of the little fishes is that everybody will have room enough, and the fish that often disappear when you put them in a larger tank will have nothing to be afraid of and will be out and about doing their thing instead of living under rocks. The damsel tank is one of my favorite kinds of tanks, they're pretty, colorful, and a technical challenge, but you simply cannot add new fish safely. The more peaceful tank is also easier when it comes to being on the road a bit. So...we go for peaceful. The 'current tank info' below is not accurate---population pending. But such are my intentions.

I've done the same over the years - everything from a dedicated 150g tank fora 4' Undulated Moray to smaller but aggressive fishes in another to finally where I'm at now - a 120g DT with the largest fish a Tomini Tang and everything else being on the smallish side and peaceful. I find it to be not only easier to keep, but also more soothing to look at. Sure, you miss out on the "WOW" factor, but I also find that having a variety of smaller fish keep people looking longer.

I'm facing a kitchen remodel and a double deadline, and it just was a moment to say---do I want the excitement---or the tranquility. In this list, the only one potentially snippy would be the yellowtails, and I might go for the chromis.

I've had 5 yellow chromis for over 4 years and they have all been good members of the tank.

Go luck, Sk8tr. Keep us updated.

I'm not going to steal your thread, but I am in the middle of completely restocking my 125. I'm thinking all small things, with some in pairs:

Damsels, grammas/chalk bass, couple wrasses, hawkfish, blennies, etc.
