Tank upgrade question

Hello,

So I will be transferring everything from my 55g to a 120+40sump.

My question is this, if I use the old water from the 55, and put that in with the remaining 95 gallons, will I be able to avoid having to cycle? I want to move everything over as fast as possible.

Also, how in the world do you guys mix up 100+ gallons of water? I can only work in 35g batches per day right now....

transferring just water will not save you a cycle.
Moving sand and live rock from existing tank over to new and adding saltwater to make full 140 some gals will. you may see a minor rise in ammonia. nitrite and nitrates due to stirring up of the nasty's in sand and also depending how you handle the live rock there may be a little die off thus a very mini cycle is possible.

whenever i setup a new tank that is being stocked by moving over existing sand/LR etc i fill the new tank with rodi water and mix salt in the tank. once parameters stabilize then i move everything over.

The sand will not be going with. New tank will be BB.

I do have rough 100lbs of LR that will be making the move.

I recently transferred everything from my 30gal to a new 80gal + 40gal sump, all LR, sand and livestock was transferred in the same day with no issue or livestock casualties.

As far as mixing up 100gals, I had the luxury of setting up the new 80gal in a separate location and was able to fill and mix new water in the aquarium before I made the transfer. If this is not the case for you then I would say a few 44gal brute cans will be needed to mix and store the needed amount of water prior to making the transfer.

If your able I would totally setup the new tank( sand and rock), cycle it and then add the everything form the old tank.

As long as the stock is the same and you minimise die off from the rocks, you should be able to just switch over with only a minor blip
