tanks and earthquakes?

I live in arizona so earthquakes arent my concern its im going to be building a house kind of close to a mine that blasts, and it is strong enough to shake the houses, so what i wanted to know is would this shaking break a tank? i thought i would ask you guys because maybe some of you have been though quakes and have seen what it does to your tank.

i hope thats not too confusing sometimes it sounds better in my head than when i write it. so all i want to know if i have about a 240 gallon reef tank and the ground shakes enough to shake the house will it break the tank.
thanks jason

Jason, I have had a 100 gallon tank for the last 10 big quakes and have never lost anything other than a quart of water! I haven't had the experience with the new 225, but it is on a metal stand and the rock is pined together with rods so I don't expect any surprises. Plan ahead and hope for the best.

In the Northridge quake my tank was swayed enough that the lighting fixture on top was knocked in and the fishes and most of the water were splashed out of the tank and a couple of feet away.

But,I'm pretty sure that was only because our apartment building had been built to sway and it did, excessively.I'm not convinced it was the ground shaking alone that caused the mess.

Last 10 big quakes? Where you around for the 1906 San Francisco big one?:D
I had an old 60 gallon FW glass tank bust a seam in the 1993 Northridge quake.

ffjpayne,
You won't have any problem w/ your 240. There are earthquakes almost daily in So Cal and problems really only happen when we have quakes of around 5+ magnitude. I highly doubt that any blasting done by the mining company will yeild any shaking more than a magnitude 3.5 quake. Blasting is realy only a vibration in the ground, unlike a quake where the ground literly moves out from underneath you.

here's another idea...dont build the house so close to the mine :)
i know it's a smartazz response...but i thought i'd bring it up anyway lol

I reinforced my stand and tank to the 2x4's behind the drywall.

For stand I used long and sturdy L Brackets. And for the tank I used some extra TV straps I had left over from a TV mount kit.
