Tanks with no power?

I live in slave lake. We were evacuated because a forest fire burnt down 3/4 of our town. I was on my way home from vacation when they turned me around. There been no power for three days and I can't go back for another two. I have a fowler and a reef. What r the odds anything will survive. And it didn't burn.
 
Depending on sizes of tanks....

Corals and most fish probably gone.

A small pump and heater on battery backup next time.

Odds are not good, fish will be the first to go, but 5 days is a really long time to expect anything to survive.
 
Wow, I've been watching that on the news every night now, so sorry for what's happening to your town. We were just talking at lunch about the irony that in Manitoba they're dealing with floods and AB is dealing with fires. Here in Halifax it's rained 31 straight days, but things will eventually dry out.

I hope that your tank survives along with your house.

SORRY to hear about this but I was reading an article about backup battery systems for aquariums in Aquarium Fish International yesterday. I am in South Florida so I am looking into a system to switch on when power is lost because of potential huricanes. I do not think Home owners Insurance will cover aquariums. Time to Google Battery backup systems. Good Luck!:uhoh2:

You can get home owners to potentially cover any equipment, but not livestock (which is what is lost in most cases).
 
i was without power for three days due to tornadoes in NC last month. i lost all 6 of my fish in my 180 in 2 days and lost about 75% of my corals (mostly sps) by the end of the third day. no flow + cold water = death. get ready for a really bad smell when you get home. i think we went through abotu 3 cans of lysol trying to air out the house.

Also, my insurance would not cover a thing that was in the tank. they said equipment would be covered in the event of a lightning strike, but livestock would not be.

sorry for your loss, i know it was tough on me to see items i had for 5 years die in 3 days.
 
sorry to hear of the fire there and the potential loss of your stuff.....here in the states they barely cover anything like that in canada and only learned about this through this thread....again sorry for the loss
 
Caught that scenario on the news last night. Bad scene. I live in the Okanagan and there was a serious fire storm (more around Kelowna) in 2003, but that was in the summer, not the spring. Pretty unusual to have the fire season start that early in your part of the country. Very sorry to hear about your situation. The odds are definitely against anything surviving without power for that many days. Here's hoping your home is in the 1/4 minority that survived. A home with contents is a much larger investment to lose than a marine tank.
 
Expect the worst and maybe you might come home to everything being okay and at least you dont get your hopes up. At least you and your family is okay and you will rebuild it if harmed better than before. Keep us updated and hope that everything is okay.

I was without power for 5 days about 3 weeks ago. there were hundreds of tornadoes and they destroyed main TVA power lines. I didn't lose anything, we did several times a day use a big cup and scoop/pour water into tank. I may lose my serpent star he was worst off, shed 2 appendages he did. Yellow Tang, 2 occelaris, cleaner wrasse all good. My frogspawn is so so though all other softies and hammer are good.
As others have said house and family are most important, but I get how you feel, every day I waited for power to come back so I wouldn't lose my few animals.

Yeah I wasn't expect much to survive. I got a freind working there and my place didn't burn but I'm sure the reef is as good as gone. Is 25c there right now. I'm just hoping my fowlr will make it at this point. I've got a zebra moray and Picasso trigger in there. Hope they make it. Thanks for the concern. It's a bad scene there right now.
 
Sorry to hear about your tragic situation. Hopefully something will have survived. More importantly sounds like you and your family are safe so that's good. Please keep us updated when you arrive home.
