My pistol shrimp "snap" all the time (any time anyting gets close). My mantis shrimp only seem to "crack" as they are busting into someone's shell.
Pistol shrimp "snap" all by themselves, while mantis shirmp "crack" by whacking something. They do sound different (but you probably need to hear both to tell the difference).
Here is how I tell the difference when I here a sound...
If you look in a hole and see "antenna", it is a pistol shrimp. If you see eyes, it is a mantis shrimp!
