At Steve's Wonderful World of Pets in Williamsville, owner Steve Lane is selling tattooed fish for the first time. Some have polka dots, some have stripes and others even have pink hearts.

The fish are imported from Singapore. Lane believes they have to be restrained and then tattooed with a tattoo gun.

Channel 2 purchased four of the fish and brought them to the SPCA for their opinion.

Spokeswoman Gina Browning says the practice is not illegal as far as she knows, but they don't condone it.

"Morally and ethically what we're looking at is incorrect. Any animal lover would agree, it's so unnatural," says Browning.

Lane believes the tattooed fish just might develop a love of the hobby for some people.

"My hope is if it gets more people into the hobby it's a good thing. If a kid comes in and sees a fish with a heart on it and says I want a fish tank and learns how to care for it, I think it's a win," says Lane.

This made the rounds last year on the other reef site. The poor fish are injected with dyes (often printing dyes) and usually don't last too long. :(

I made the mistake of purchasing two painted glass fish a few years ago. These are FW glass fish (which are really cool because they are transparent!) that have two stripes of color on their tops and bottoms. Not terribly unreasonable to think it's natural, since Tetras kinda look like that, and they told me at the store that it was natural.

Anyway, I found out later that the color comes from dyes that are tattooed into the fish. I don't condone that behavior, and don't shop in that store anymore. One of the glass fish is still alive today, and still has some dye on its top.

Sick and wrong.

Next they will be tattooing those hairless cats to suit their owners decor (or match their own). Sickos!

Not that I think the fish cares, but having to do this to get people into the hobby... talk about the wrong reasons!

The fish that don't survive the tattooing process and subsequent illness from stress and infection probably don't appreciate it.
