Tbs & Dsb Oolic Sand?????

Yes, dependin on how your cycle goes, on how your upkeep goes you can keep a lot of stuff going.

for example when I got my first tbs rock for a 55 tank I got what was then some tiny buds that I did not even see...
today I have 2 big Gorg's that I have to trim from time to time or they would take over the tank.

also sponge, pistol shrimps, bristle worms, pods, cup coral and more...
 
I am so glad to hear that the critters are lasting long term....I have just ordered my 92 gal corner aquarium ...It will arrive the end of next week....I want to fill with saltwater, get sump with fuge running before I order "the package"....Only one thing haunts me...I read on another forum that the gulf area is cooler than most of the tropical areas where other life in my future tank will come from....TBS tanks seem to be in the 75 degree range with not much higher temps....Will that be a problem???

well a few things ....

first the gulf waters at the surface vary a lot over the year, summers can have 80+ water temps at the surface.
winter temps get cold but not too cold.

next is that good "coral reef" temps are right about 77-78
higher than 80 and a lot of things can die or be stressed.

so 77-78 is fine for tbs rock.

I have kept tbs rock as high as 82 when I did not have a chiller and no a/c and it showed no direct problems.

so temp is not a problem.

Why in the video are the rocks not under water in the pails???? Noone has answered that....

well that is really a question for richard to answer as he does the diving.

but I can imagine that in getting the rock out of the water and back to shore there are times when you can't keep 100% of the rock 100% in the water.
as long as it gets back in water as soon as possible it will not have much of a problem.

"the other kind" is left out for days some times...

and a small boat with all that rock and water gets to be dangerous if it's to heavey loaded...
I am sure he keeps the majority of the rock esp. the coral and sponge in water.

Actually....he asked me the same in an email...and I told him...

"that video was from 15 years ago when we had to clean the coral off the rocks before landing"

things are different now..

Hey RICHARD!!!! THERE you are!!!....I know patience is a virtue but I am SOLD on your awesome live rock & can't wait to have a tank with REAL live rock in it!!! I AM a little nervous about the "undesirables" & am unsure of how to get them all out...I'm sure RC will have LOTS of advice!!!! I want to have a fuge in my tank with oolic sand for de-nitrification.....How would you reccomend I go about it to compliment YOUR rock & sand in my main display??? I have a 92 gal corner with built in overflow on order with a sump with built in fuge....I am very anxious to talk to you about my order.....Sue
Ps....If I want to try and cycle the tank with the fuge full of sand & LR would that help speed up the process when part 1 of "the package" arrives????

LOL. This is exactly how i felt when i ordered a month ago. Now to burst your bubble. I have no idea how to set up a fuge but my advice would be to get the display tank set up with part 1 and 2 before doing anything else. I know it is unbearable to wait for the full cycle but I would advise doing the package step for step, and nothing else for the time being.

The reason is simply because this package is unique. The rock is dependent on the sand and vice versa. Any substitution/additions/subtractions to your system other than the package is asking for trouble, UNTIL the cycling is complete. Putting different non-live sand in the fuge will not speed things up because the circulation is still part of your overall system. All the little things that you've done for previous tanks or things that other people do to cycle their tanks does not work with TBS.

Take the time during part 1 to finetune your pluming, optimize in-tank water circulation, and of course, read RC and reefkeeping magazine. IF you follow part 1 to the letter your tank should cycle in 10 days or less. Seems like a long time, but I assure you it goes fast. Once you get part 2 in and COMPLETELY CYCLED, then, IMO, you can think about adding non-TBS stuff.

Just my $.02.

My rush to start with sump/fuge set up was presicely to start the cycle & get it completely stabilized THEN AFTER BACTERIA IS SET UP IN THE TANK....Add part 1....
My hope was to at least get SOME bacteria started (as much as the tank can multiply before adding anything)
THEN....Let it add more bacteria with the new rock in Part 1....
Would the bacterias war with each other????
Not trying to argue
just want to understand the error of my ways on paper before I do it in tank....
 
Ah, misunderstood. That seems like it should work. I seem to recall someone mentioning that they precycled as well on here.

I think if I got the question right then yes.

if you setup the tank and sump and get the water going then it can help with the later steps.

a lot of the system needs to get "broke in" like the inside of the plumbing, over time they get a kind of "slime coat" of bacteria.

also getting the skimmer ready to skim good before adding too much ....

for your sump's sand bed I would size it and order some sand and a few rocks from richard to put in after a wait of say 2 weeks.
that should give some time for the tank to get going a bit and by adding some live sand and rock to the sump / fuge it will add more bacteria and plankton to the system.

then add part 1 of the main package... and so on.

go slow... relax...

Over one million pounds of imported Bahamian coral rock was barged to the site and dropped by crane in September 1993.

How is it that the critters in Part 1 don't die as being part of a newly cycled tank????
Is it because they already have been in with the same rock & sand & the only trama is being moved & newly set up???
