Tds

Quick question - I have an AquaFx RODI unit and the TDS from the water supply is 154 and TDS exiting the RO membrane is 17. Is that normal for the TDS out of the RO membrane to be so high? I am running a booster pump as well.

AquaFX RODI 98% Membrane rejection I do believe. How old is it? RO Membrane if it's 98% should be around 4 or so before going to DI. With it this high you will go through DI resin very fast. What is your city water? Well water or?

I am not on well water. The system is a couple months old. Yes that is what I thought from my research that it should be closer to 4.

Are you waiting a minute or so after turning it on before measuring?
If so your membrane is toast or not fully seated..

You are under 90% rejection which is not good..

How do you turn it off between uses?

If the water runs out of the membrane canister between uses it can go bad really quick.

Oh. I just turn off the water supply. Turn off the Booster pump and store the unit until I make water again. Is there a special way to turn off between uses?

Curious that have a flush valve? If not should get one easy to install. I am thinking your membrane is shot.. could be from not flushing it or pre-filters not taken out enough sediment, etc before hitting membrane.. temp of water is also important hot water will destroy membrane or if it gets frozen.

Yes I installed a flush valve Friday last week. I will look and ensure RO membrane is seated correctly tomorrow. Any other troubleshooting tips? I double checked today to ensure pins were aligned correctly in the TDS meter.

Thanks. I did some troubleshooting this morning to see if I could understand what is happening based on my limited experience.

Let me take a step back. I recently installed the 100gpd piggyback membrane in series as I wanted to conserve water. The TDS I detailed yesterday was after the T with the product water of both membranes.

For my own peace of mind I ran the dual TDS inline monitor after the product water from each membrane before they merged. The TDS after 1st membrane which was supplied with water from the tap was 5 and the TDS from the 2nd membrane which was supplied with the waste water from first membrane was 20.

I then switched the TDS probe to test waste water going into 2nd membrane and it is 200.

I stopped at that point as the final thing I would have done is switch the order of the flow between membranes (tap to waste ) or switched membranes to see if the readings would have been the same.

Any thoughts?

What is the pressure into the second membrane?
Your rejection rate there is currently 90%..
That is poor but it could be due to the lower pressure.. (or just a bad/crappy membrane)

And again are you waiting some time after starting the flow of water to measure TDS output?

Yes I am waiting 15 mins to measure TDS. I am using an aquatec booster pump set to 80 psi when I was using one membrane and with the 2nd installed it drops to around 70 so I am assuming the pressure is good.

I decided to do one final test and run the 2nd membrane alone with tap water and it has been running for over 20 mins (but will let it run for 45) and the TDS is measuring 9/10 ppm so far. This is with booster pump at 80 Psi as only using one membrane. So not sure if that is pointing to crappy membrane or deposits on membrane from taking waste from other membrane.

Just seems like the second membrane is one that nets around 90-95% rejection rate at the provided pressure/feed temperature..

If that is outside of its recommended specs then its time to replace it..

I would love to say thanks to all those who pitched in to give guidance and advice on this issue.

Much appreciated that you took the time to help me.
