Tearing down a perfect wall......450 gallon Bowfront

I will have custom pieces of mirriors made for the sides and bottom fill ins. I'm not sure if I'm going to do the same with the top sections, also this will be outlined in oak trim to match the rest of my trim throughout the house.

Mirrors may not be a good idea. I don't know how vary the fish can see outside the tank, but
the reflection ma cause a problem. Just a thought. Nice tank

Thanks everyone for the comments, I've been wanting to do something like this for a long time, I figure might as well be now.

Itaysworld: I would have loved to have the tank protrude past the drywall, the biggest obstical is that there is a large header running parallel with the top of the wall and I was not able to cut that ceiling out in that section wihtout fearing I might weaken the structure of my roof, and that would be bad . It was bad enough I cut out and boxed two rafters behind that header just so i have enough room to do what I need it for. So that was also one of my other reasons I decided that I would just have to get used to it.

ozzman69: I have definatly thought about the mirrior idea, I figured if I filled in the top bottom and sides with mirror it would give the illusion that the tank was wider and also looked deeper.
I guess it's goign to be trial and error, I'll paint the sides and just set the mirror sides in place and see how the fish react to it . The last thing I want them to do is charge the corner of the tank thinking they are in a larger tank than it really is. Also I know some species might see their own reflection and start attacking the tank . So like I said it's a thought and I'll try it, if it dont work I'll take them down.
If you guys notice when this project is done, you shouldn't be able to see any of the seams where the tank is glued together.

Tonight I started to setup and cut the 3/4" pcv pieces for the closed loop and figure out how it needs to be plumbed and get an idea where everything needs to run down too.
Tomorrow I'll start on the returns from the sumps to the top of the tank.
I'll post some more pics in the next few days if I can.
I'm getting ready to leave for florida next tuesday for 2 weeks (can you say VACATION FINALLY!!!) So I'm not sure how much more will be done in the next two days before I leave + I'm tired as heck , so I'm calling it a night.

Quick update before I leave tomorrow. I needed to tie in both my sumps below because I need to keep the levels in both sumps the same.
So anyway I drove out to Aquatica today because I needed a few short 1-1/2" bulkheads but wound up buying 2- 2" Bulkheads and a 2" quick connect valve. This thing was a monster!!!
(Did I mention they were actually closed) , but were nice enough to let me get what I needed.

I might run two of these , one on each side of the brace.

Heres what I'm talking about in the center of the stand.

Here is how close this valve will be between both tanks, I'm thinking around 1/8" on each side with the pvc glued in place. Right now the tanks are pushed together for mocking up.

Here is some of the plumbing for the feed to the top and the return out of the overflow.

Here is a pic of the returns I have together so far, I guess I'm going to run the returns into the holes where the top of the old overflow openings were, so I can install lids on the center openings , try to control some evaporation and humidity.

This is how I was thinking about running the closed loop section off the back of the tank in the center, giving it a somewhat a circular water rotation and then going back to the overflow teeth in the top of the corners. I'm sure I'm going to have to run those bendable returns and point them in the direction I want to eliminate any cavitation and the top. We'll see.

This is what I threw to the side to make this project happen this year.

I can't wait to get back in that thing next season for some 1/4 mile passes. :eek2:

Hope you guys enjoy your Turkeyday, of corse on the 24th.
I'm bringing the camera and laptop with, so if I see anything cool I'll take some pics and I'll be sure to share with everyone.

Best to date is 8.75 @150 , belt and blower brace broke around 1000 ft last year , that e.t. in the 1/8 should have been around a low 8.60 pass. Our class Renegade(nmra) has alot of strict rules.
I need to do some upgrades on it this winter to get another 10th or two out of it before next season. Car makes around 850 hp to the wheels, 304 hyd roller ,550 cam , no intercooler, no wheelie bars or ladder bars, very strict rules.

Yeah, don't keep us watiing.... what does that thing run in the 1/4.... or the 1/8th even. I also see the roll bars.... must be fast for all the saftey things you have installed. I miss my 87 monte carlo SS. It had a 334 stroker (305 with a 400 crank) and it ran 7.90's in the 1/8th. Not a super fast car but fast enopugh for it's size.

Looks like a wild ride man, Those are some impressive times. Just sold a mid 10's FD rx7 street car daily driven. Need a new toy

I'll tell ya there's nothing else like that adreniline rush.
I tell everyone I'm just along for the ride. hahaha
I've pulled some good long wheelies, crowd pleaser, just tears up too much stuff for me though.

HOLY MOLY...All boost and no juice? What kinda heads & tranny..Fuel injected???

I had 3 and hope to get another 1 down the road. That car is from my High School Days. I still remember when the new 87 body style came out. I made a wooden race car out of an 87 Gt for shop in the 8th grade..Hahhahaha

I know this a reef thread but if you want to post some more pics that would be sweet.

Yeah Eric all boost over 30#'s and fuel injected with a c-4, still has a piggyback Pms old school for the computer, hoping to go to DFI this year if I can afford it.
Anyways I'm gonna get this thread back on fish so heres is a small update on my vacation today, not thrilling but was worth it.

:UPDATE:

Today we toook a ride down to the cape coral pier just to look around and noticed a few people fishing off the dock, well we got out to the "T" of the pier and a fisherman just caught a Puffer fish, and he throws this thing about 20' in the air untill it lands on the floor all puffed up! I was in disbelief !!! Well I tell my father-inlaw Paul that I don't think you can eat puffer fish so he picks it up and we take couple pics of it and throws it back in the water, OH man you should have heard these guys yelling that they fillet them and they get $8.00 a pound for thier meat , so I say sorry and go to hand him 8 bucks and told him I would rather see the fish live instead of seeing it gutted in front of me, Of corse after that he calms down and says he was only kidding and not to worry about it.
After that I figured it was time to get the heck outta there cause I wasn't gonna see that happen again, ya know I could have seen it if was a fish that they could eat but come on we put these animals in our tanks and strive to keep them alive, not eat.

Call me a wimp but I can't stand to see any animal suffer.
Anyway can someone Id this type of puffer that my father-in-law is holding?
BTW the idiot in the background with the red shirt was the one that threw it from that far away.

Just a small update. I've been trying to finish up the rest of the plumbing for the returns and closed loop, everything was mocked up but I had to take it all apart so it could be glued for final assembly.
I also bought 200 lbs of crushed coral for the tank, rinsed it all to get as much dust out so it's not so bad when I fill up the tank.
Tonight I just got done cleaning and arranging all the rock in my 125, it was in need of some desperate cleaning. so I' didn't do anything to the big tank tonight.
I should have some pictures worth posting this weekend.
