i need some more color in my tank and this fish has been suggested to me by several people. i'd love to hear about your experiences with it, if you have had one.

i have also posted in snorvich's thread in the "new to hobby" forum to get his take.

Got mine when he was small 2.5", now he is approaching 8". Model citizen as far as a reef goes, but is easily spooked and goes into camo mode. One thing is when he hit about 5" or so he decided that he didn't like my Desjaradini and vice versa. Not sure if it was a coloring or body shape issue but they would bite each others tails and the Desjaradini would literally bite down the dorsal fin of the foxface when the foxface would flare. Long story short this was isolated with the Zebrasoma tang only and he was with others without issue. They are cool fish, but don't bring much to the table as far as personality goes

I have several over the years, and have always enjoyed them. They can be moody or skittish sometimes, but it usually passes. They have a unusual look and habit, and are easy to keep, so I always recommend them to clients who want unique without high price. My largest one grew to 12 inches, which is larger than their scientific description states.

I had mine for 3 and a half years his name was Jerome, he was one of my favorite fish even though they are poisonous they are extremely docile, they are not as active or large as most tangs, they are very skittish and for the first few weeks in my tank he would hide in the rock work every time i came into the room. As i said before they are not as large as many tangs but they are very thick. They grow relatively slowly and mine had only grown 3.5 inches from the size i bought him when he died. They are great additions to your tank with the only bad parts being there skittishness, venom and, i don't know if this has happened to anybody else, but the fact that a lot of guests that see my tank think he is a deformed version of my yellow tang.

Great fish. Along with the Kole Tang they totally removed the hair algae from my tank!

As other's have said they are shy. Mine is often not seen by visitors as it goes into camo mode anytime anyone is moving or talking around the tank.

Mine is usually not the color I see in pictures. I think this is a function of being shy. It's usually a dark yellow with almost black upper half. If I sit across the room it will become bright yellow.

Love mine, great algae eater and doesn't bother a thing.
May get too big for you, and isn't always bright yellow.

I highly recommend getting a fox face.
My foxface is definitely not shy. It has bright yellow coloration and will eat from my hand.
The fish gets along fine with all of the other fish in my system. And it thinks it must be a tang, as it patrols the tank with my Kole Tang and Mimic Tang. Between the three of them, I have never had any algae issues in my display tank.
And as an added bonus, my fox face DEVOURS bubble algae. Periodically, I get bubble algae in my sump, but I do not have any in the display tank. I wondered why that was so I added a piece of rock with the algae into the display and the foxface picked it clean in a matter of seconds. Great to know!

Mine will spurt water when im working behind the tank to get my attention. Stop and think if it were to ever jump out if the tank and remember its venom before picking it up.

steve said he would avoid another "largish" algae eater (i already have a kole tang) in a 75g so i'm back to square one.

thanks for all the replies. when i get my 240g set up, i'll consider it then. haha! i wish!!

Yeah in a 75g I wouldn't suggest it and possibly not in a 240g either

i was kidding about the 240. :) a 75g is my limit both space and weight-wise. if i had a bigger house, i definitely would have upgraded to a bigger tank.

well, you know, i suppose it isn't out of the realm of possibility some day. i live in a mobile home. when i was contemplating a bigger tank, i had my builder guy come out and shore up the floor from underneath. he's one of those who always does a little bit more. by the time he got done, he said i could have an 8' tank soooo.......

just, please, don't tell johnike. he will pester me till i cave!

Well the jump from a 75 to 240 is substantial in all aspects so just keep that in mind. Plus thousands of dollars it will cost you

I have had mine with a square tail bristletooth tang in a 90 gallon for quite sometime. Zero issues between the two fish. Mine cleared the tank of bubble algea as well. Mine is normally front and center in the tank.

I'll present an opposing point of view. I don't care for any members of the rabbitfish family. The are spastic and venomous, which is a bad combination in my book, especially when my hands are in the tank. Fox faces also grow large fairly quickly. I have never been a fan. There are so many other choices for a cool yellow fish. Longnose butterfly or various other yellow butterflies, yellow coris wrasse, lemonpeel angel, yellow tang, just to name a few.

I got mine in October. went from 3" to 5". never a problem although he is the biggest fish in the tank. I have all soft corals in my 120 gal. and the only thing he rips up is the nori. great for algae control.
