What could cause zoanthid tentacles to grow longer and thinner without apparently affecting the health, growth or appearance of the polyps otherwise?

Just the fact that it is in captivity, depending on the species.
I don't see that as a big deal.
In some cases it could be low water flow, but it's almost never the case.
I've had that happening with zoas and plays under a good flow too, so go figure...
