Thats mostly correct, except the lakers would have to amnesty him over the summer, before the start of next season. It was "widely" thought that lakers would use it on mwp. However, this injury throws a big monkey wrench into the plans. The amnesty from my understanding and please correct me if I'm wrong. If Kobe returns and the lakers franchise feels he isn't worth keeping anymore they can release him. What that means is he gets his salary but it doesn't reflect the lakers cap. This is a very big deal right now because it saves the Lakers about 45 mill. As basketball fans we know the Lakers has always given the finger to the cap but in 2014 the NBA has applied even more strict rules. One of the rules was any team over the cap will have to pay $1.5 for ever $1 over the cap. Since the Lakers already know they may lose kobe and he wants to retire they can and may cut their losses. Lakers will revamp and its just gonna happen one year sooner and with a little more capital.
This is great news for Howard fans. If somehow he starts to dominate that means $$ for him. Looks like the changing of the guards will happen sooner but I'm not dumb enough to bet against kobe returning and doing ok at the least.
If Kobe is amnestied, the Lakers pay him him his ~30m that he is due but it doesnt go against their salary cap next year. When the player is amnestied, other teams which are under the cap will bid on this player. Lets say the top bid for kobe for next year would be 8m from the cavs. Cavs would get him, pay him 8m and lakers would pay whats left of the contract (22 mil ). However, there is no way the lakers are getting him back next year if they do. Knowing Kobe, he may not come back at all if they "do him like that" except to get his jersey retired.
