That dreaded popping sound

I've read through quite a bit of the forums mostly in anticipation of the worst. And most people complained about losing livestock when hearing a popping sound. Which was then attirbuted to mantis shrimp. (Which also plagued my best friend and his tank.)

Well, starting two nights ago, I started hearing it. The popping noise. I haven't lost any livestock yet. (Not that there's much to lose.) But this makes me extremely paranoid.....

What do you suggest that I do?

take a water bottle, cut the top off, and put the drinking part inside of the bottle. set it in the tank and it will only be a matter of time...

I tried this a few months ago and managed to catch my hermits and some pods. Hehe. How do I avoid having the hermits going in there?

It's like at night, I'll hear "pop," a few seconds, sometimes minutes, pass and then I hear another. It's definitely not an orchestra of pops, luckily. Whatever is causing them seems to be singular in nature.

sounds to me like a pistol shrimp.. there fine to have. I have one, altho I cant say ive heard him in a few days.. hummm anyways, they have one big claw that they snap to scare off attackers and let other pistol shrimp know that they own that rock.. :P do you have a lot of sand that gets moved around one rock? if you do, its probably a pistol..

I hope it's that. I've never seen the guy though and the fighting conch seem to smooth out my sand everyday, so I don't know about any sand getting moved around. Does a mantis sound different?
