He runs it all the time, changing it every 14 days now.
Ok, so that's what I've been doing. :) I think we may go ahead and get a phosban reactor for the carbon. Thanks for the suggestion. :)

Got the 40 gallon frag tank set up!!!

Micki, you have to explain how it works specifically so your fans can copy you. What keeps the carbon out of the exit tubing?

Here ya go!

Specifics: Items needed:
1. Chamber (whole house water filter unit)

2. 3/4 inch PVC pipe which fits where the typical filter unit sits.

3. 3/4x1 bushing reducer (PVC)

4. foam donut (can buy at Lowes or Home Depot, wet vac filter)

Steps to make:
1. Place PVC pipe on bushing reducer. Cut to length to fit where filter was.

2. drill 1/8 inch holes around the bottom of the PVC. We drilled 10 holes.

3. Cut 2 foam filter donuts to fit in the top of the chamber.

4. Hook the chamber up backwards as indicated on the top of the unit. A typical water filter would work coming in on the outside and feed through the center. This needs to run the opposite way. So, reverse the flow so it comes in the center pipe.

5. Hook the pipes to your water system and you are good to go! (of course rinse carbon well) Also start with low flow, gradually increasing to the desired flow rate. You can see the carbon rolling a bit. Adjust your flow accordingly.

What are you using to push the water through the carbon filter?
The main tank pump. HD 70 Pump.

We will be changing that though. We think we may be bleeding off the main tank flow so we will run the phosban and carbon and fuge with another pump. Not sure what pump we will be using as of yet. Any suggestions?

How are those frags coming along Micki? The tank setup you have is great. I have a great respect for those that do things on there own.

Secondgen, thank you! Funny you should menteion the frag tank. I made some changes to my aquascape and moved several pieces to the frag tank. Here are a few pictures of the side that I changed. I'll work on the other side hopefully tomorrow. The changes weren't huge, but I recently got some shelf rock that I was excited to use. I also took out 2 of the acrylic stands on this side.

If you look close, you can see several of my new SPS frags in there. :) A few fallen things as well. I'll have to take care of that tomorrow. This was obviously taken after the lights are out. I will also be pulling the bubble coral oaut when I have a little more room in the frag tank for it to have it's own space. I've considered selling it. It's very big and takes up a lot of room because it's so aggressive.

Here are some pictures of the frag tank with several pieces moved from the main tank. I will be moving several of these zoas back to the mian tank. I wanted to seperate them to see what I even had.

I broke a rock of yellow zoas. I've had several people ask me for frags of that.

I've temporally moved the Devils Hand to the frag tank. Here are a few pictures. It had been out of the water for a few minutes so I could chissel it off the large rock it was on. It is shriveled up a bit and not as large as normal. It's still Huge! I will be fraggin some of this.

It was time to prune the macro, but I have a few fellow reefers wanting some, so I moved it to the frag tank until they can get it. Kind of nice to have that little bit of extra room for things. :)
