Micki, I have an update for you. I have removed the under gravel filter and the crushed coral. I have added a sand bed and converted my wet/dry into a make shift refug. I have about 5-6 inches of live sand in there too. I also have purchased some macro for the fug. Nitrates are still real high, :mad2: getting ready to do another 25 gallon water change tonight. Hoping to bring an end to the nitrate madness... Not sure what else to do about the nitrates.. Water changes and wait I suppose.. Trying to remain cool...:)
Sounds like you are on the right track. They make a nitrate sponge material. You might consider that if they don't come down. Kents nitrate sponge is one that comes to my mind. I forget if you have a sump or any kind of filtration? Do you have a skimmer?

Hey Micki, I saw your post about your corals coloring up in Marc's thread. Just thought I would pass on what I was just told by a friend here that has the prettiest corals I have ever seen. He said he reduced his MH lighting time from 10 hrs to 8 and all the colors darkened up. Just a thought. I 'm not sure what your lighting schedule is.
Dark is my problem. A lot of them turn brown or a dark "blah" color. My MH schedule is 12:30-8:30 so they are on 8 hours now. :(

Wow, I had forgotten about this thread and thought I'd warn you that your "clone" is nearing. I already have the tank just need to fancy up the stand and find a good place for it.

I was wondering if you could give me some tips on transferring everything over? Was there anything you would do different if you could do it over? Did you reuse all the water from the 55g?

I'm a little worried about moving everything over so quickly, I would hate to lose something over a stupid mistake.

leeweber85, How exciting!!! I too was a little nervous about the move being all in one day. Melev gave me the suggestions of how to move and there is not one thing I would do different for my move!!! I used as much of the old water as I could. Of course I had water in containers holding coral and critters. Then I had a bucket of used water that I rinsed each piece of LR with. The rest all went in the tank. Added the new water then completed the task by adding a few cups of my existing sand in some stockings for seeding. After two weeks removed those and poof all went great! I think I started the move around 10:00am and had it completely finished and everything cleaned up by 2:00 in the afternoon or something like that.

One of the biggest things I would recomend is make sure you put garbage bags one the new sand prior to adding water. Then put something heavy on the bags. I used plates then had to put bowls on top of the plates for enough wate. I have pictures of that entire process. I had little to no sand storm at all. Good luck! Let me know if you have any more questions!

I have a skimmer, it's the one that was built into the wet/dry. I am relying on the live rock (around 80lbs.) and sand beds as my filter. I have an old whisper hang on filter that holds carbon, should I put that on there? I read some where on RC that live rock and dsb is the best filtrationi.. Is that not correct?

No you are fine, I just didn't remember seeing that anywhere. I run carbon 24/7 as well.

I remember the pictures of your carbon filter. I know you reversed the flow but how do you keep the carbon from flowing into your lines.. I tried that on my house filter and filled the house lines with carbon what a mess it was. I work at a carbon facility and have access to carbon that will reduce nitrates so I have a sock of that stuff in my sump..

I'd have to ask my husband specifically, but I know there is some kind of filter on the top. Although I never see the carbon going to the top. I'll ask him tonight and post what he says.

I also went from a 50 gallon to a 125 gallon.

Cool! I thought the upgrade was pretty fun myself. :)

You can seed teh tank by just putting about 4-5 pounds of live sand in one spot. You really do not have to wrap it in anything.

I had crushed coral in my 55 gallon tank. I used sugar fine aragonite in my 125. I didn't want to mix the two sands. This was much easier to do and only took 2 weeks then it was gone.

Isn't it time for an update to this thread?

Yes I need to do some updating. I'll get to that in my spare time. ;)

It's been a bit of a crazy summer but thanks for the reminder. I'll put it on my "to do" list. ;)

Sad Day... Well I was looking in my tank and noticed my female mandarin acting weird. I then notice my normally fat happy male mandarin wasn't looking so good. His fins looked jagged and he was laying on the bottom barely breathing. The female was bitting him. It actually looked like she was biting his eyes. I can't figure out if she was attacking him or trying to get him to go with her. They were just starting to seem like a "pair" :( Unlike a lot of mandarins, he was out and about 99% of the time. She was starting to be out almost as much as him as of late. I have no idea what happened. He was one of the fattest mandarins I have ever seen! She was quite a bit smaller than he was. I've had him for 2 years and her for about 8 or 9 months.

Maybe I skipped past it, but how is the water to your carbon chamber feed?

I have a mag drive that runs the water on both the carbon chamber and the phosban reactor.
