The 180 gallon Ocean Reef

Thanks for the heads up man! I'm still tweaking some things. Hopefully all goes well. I was thinking about going with the g l a s s h o l e s, but heard they are somewhat noisy and you have to put some sort of material in there to quiet them down. I'm not a believe of putting thing in the overflow. lol Also, I didn't want to risk cracking my 180. :worried2:

AS long as you have enough flow though the overflow, they will never break siphon. Low flow will allow the bubbles to collect in the top of the u tubes until they break siphon. With higher flow, they get flushed right through never collecting in the top. I was worried when I first started using this type of overflow, but with enough testing the above info is what I found.

Hey, everyone. Hope your tanks are doing good! Sorry for the lack of updates I been pretty busy lately and also ran out of extra space on my memory stick.

Without further ado. Here's the tank! :)

I see you are coming along nicely. I will be following your progress...have you had any aggression issues with the tangs in the tank? Oh your pictures of Hawaii were amazing! I like how you also used the less is more with the live rock.

Great to hear, glad to have you on board nightowl!:fish2: The tangs actually get along with one another and I'll catch them hanging out a lot. They'll all eat nori together whether it's on the clip or out of my hand. thanks for the compliment about the hawaii pics!

Throughout all my setup I've learned less is actually more like you said. Fish have more swimming room and allows for corals to grow out.

First time I ever drilled a tank..

First time I ever drilled a tank..

Fully stocked with fish and corals. Figured now's a better time than never! I wasn't sold on the siphon fed oveflow. It works fine, but realistically can't have my system dependent on a siphon.

First step was to drain the tank halfway so if something went wrong I'd only have half the mess to clean up. ;) Oh yeah, didn't want to get electrocuted as well.

After a few practice drills I built up the courage to give it a go! Here's the results.

i like it but not the bb btw the pics of hawaii are very nice

I agree, check out my most recent photos. I have a mix of sand crushed coral. I couldn't come to terms with a bb and had to add some sand to get that more natural feel.

However, I've seen some really nice BB tanks as well! When they become fully encrusted with coraline algae they look sweet, just takes awhile.

This is where the overflow will be plumbed to

I like to keep it nice and simple for easy maintenance and organization.

Hey i like the tank i actually have my basement being finished and then a new tank build. with the new overflow why did you go with the 700 gallon an hour instead of the 1500 gallon an hour. i dont think the 700 will be enough turn over for a sps tank. the two tower overflows on the rr 180 would give you about 1400 gallons an hour. just a question thanks and keep up the good work

Sounds exciting, got to love those new builds. I actually went with my own modified box. This will handle up to 1300gph. Slow flow through the sump is good for filtration and microbubbles. Sound was important as well with this setup and only have about 500-600gph going to the overflow. I like a gentle waterfall sound which is nice and relaxing and not a tsunami. My powerheads are virtually silent and there is no other background noise just the overflow because all the other equipment is stationed in the basement.
