If you have detritus may I suggest this worm . Lived in a DSB for 5 years and near as I can tell it's still there.

That's partially why your tank has survived so long (not to impugn your reefkeeping ability ). Those worms eat the waste in your tank and poop out clean sand.

Interesting part about this Paul is that you and I violate what seems to be a taboo. We both collect items from local waters and add them to our tanks with whatever hitch hikers may be included.

Sometimes we get lucky and the hitch hiker is a worm that dines on the anaerobic waste in a sandbed and cleans up the detritus from the rest of the tank.

Yes and we seem to be lucky a lot
